Job description

The King’s estate is historically important and iconic, consisting of more than 100 buildings ranging in age from the 1780s to the current day. Day to day waste management activities

Coordinating day to day waste management activities of the University’s various streams of waste with campus managers and with contract mangers including General and Recyclable Waste (DMR) Organic Waste, WEEE, Construction Waste and Hazardous Waste (clinical, offensive, anatomical animal bedding etc).

Managing the waste budget

Managing and report on the waste financial budget, including validating of invoices, ensuring payment in a timely fashion and preparation of monthly/quarterly accruals for the finance team as they occur

Communications and engagement

Attend monthly meetings of the Building User Groups and Lab User Groups to discuss issues relating to waste; delivering training e.g. toolbox talks and refresh training for all streams of waste as needed. Engagement with sector agencies (EAUC- Waste group, LUPC, WRAP) to strengthen King’s presence within the sector.

Waste Legislation

Ensuring King’s are fully compliant with current legislation and codes of practice relating to waste generation, storage, and disposal. Liaise with compliance agencies such as CEDREC, the Compliance People, etc to keep abreast of change sin legislation and communicate to campus manages the impact this will have on their operations.

Management of Waste Data

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a part-time post at 0.6 FTE.

Key responsibilities
- Implementation of the Waste Management Policy 2021, and The Waste and Resource Strategy and Action Plan 2021-24.
- Managing the University’s ‘Warp-It’ accounts and other reuse and donation accounts.
- Finance and Procurement
- Management of the Clinical, Hazardous and Animal Bedding
- Communications and Engagement
- Waste Legislation
- Management of Waste Data.
- The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post._

Essential criteria

1. Excellent and proven administration skills e.g. organised record keeping, retrieving, analysing, presenting data and producing reports.

2. Experience of coordinating with multiple work areas simultaneously

3. Strong written and oral communication skills

4. Strong IT skills especially in the use of Microsoft Products

5. Ability to deal with a wide variety of people in a professional and assured manner.

6. Good time management skills, in order to handle a large volume of work with tight deadlines.

Desirable criteria

1. Understanding of the principles of waste management, waste minimization and resource re-use.

2. Qualifications in Waste Management, Environmental Sustainability or similar.

3. Experience working as a Sustainability Officer, Waste Coordinator/Officer or for a waste management company.

4. Experience working in the higher or further education sector, for the NHS, or a UK public sector agency.
