Salisbury, United Kingdom Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Speech & Language Therapist in Stroke (Band 5) We are looking for a qualified Speech & Language Therapist who is ready to start work as soon as possible.

This is a wonderful opportunity and supportive job for a recently or newly qualified Speech & Language Therapist to develop skills in the assessment, diagnosis and intensive treatment of in-patients on our Stroke Unit.

This post can be tailored to suit a newly qualified SLT, or a current Band 5 SLT who is looking to develop their skills in treatment and work within a stroke unit.

The post holder would be part of a progressive, supportive and flexible adult SLT team that covers acute, out-patients and community patients, where all SLT teams and Admin staff are based in the Speech & Language Therapy Department at Salisbury District Hospital. This ensures opportunity for immediate and daily clinical supervision and case discussions, plus administrative support from our dedicated SLT secretarial team.

We have a variety of instrumental technology, computer based therapy programmes, and good access to IT and AAC equipment, to support and enhance your treatments to stroke patients.

Qualifications required include a degree in Speech & Language Therapy, as well as membership of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists, and being registered with the Health & Care Professions Council. Experience of a NHS adult placement is also required.

The SLT team embraces new ways of working and has worked hard to be at the forefront of helpful and emerging technology. Therefore our patients have good access to a range of instrumental dysphagia investigations for swallow assessments and instrumental devices for treatment. For patients with communication disorders, we have a broad range of computer based therapy available, and quick access to unlimited AAC.

This post holder will join our Stroke SLT team (approx. 3.0 wte qualified SLT’s) working on our 30 bed Stroke Unit in Salisbury District Hospital, covering the hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation phases of stroke care for in-patients. On the Stroke Unit we work closely with our MDT colleagues to deliver well-coordinated intensive treatment and care to in-patients, and we have good links with the Stroke Association, the ESD team, and the community teams for stroke.

This post is aimed at giving you a sound working knowledge to assess, diagnose and treat a range of communication disorders as a result of stroke. You will also have the opportunity to observe dysphagia assessments and to implement some dysphagia therapies, as our service provides weekly videofluoroscopy and FEES clinics to support diagnosis and treatment planning in dysphagia.

Salisbury District Hospital is a friendly environment where it is easy to make good connections and working relationships that enable us to make positive changes for patients. At the same time, the hospital is home to some regional specialist services that will provide you with unique clinical experiences.

We are lucky to all be based in a modern and purpose-build SLT department, close to most wards, and shared with our regional Cleft Lip and Palate SLT colleagues. We also have a dedicated team of SLT Admin staff which enables us to concentrate on our clinical work.

We feel strongly that it is important to provide our SLT team members with as much training and development as we can and as needed, and as a small team we meet often. We thrive on an ethos of sharing our learning, being supportive to each other, and being helpful and flexible at work when needed.

The hospital Trust is continually looking at ways to improve services for both patients and staff, and has lots of initiatives to enhance your job, your well being, and your career. In addition we benefit from support teams in many areas such as IT and Education, as well as Art Care, Voluntary Services, the staff Health & Fitness Club and swimming pool. There is on-site parking, and recently our Trust awarded our staff with an additional day of leave on their birthdays (after 12 months of service).

Please see attached Job description and person specification for full details of roles and responsibilities.
