Overview:
The London Borough of Harrow is looking for two Housing Benefit Financial Assessment Officers to join our busy, customer centred Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support service. The post holders will be responsible for assessing complex Housing Benefit claims including supported and temporary accommodation. They will have an in-depth knowledge of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support regulations as well as ability to quickly learn Harrow’s local Council Tax Support scheme. Delivering a high level of accuracy to around 13,000 of the borough’s most vulnerable households within a performance management framework is of utmost importance. We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about their role and are eager to progress within the service.

The post will be a hybrid role with the majority of time spent working from home.

About you:

- Extensive current knowledge and understanding of all relevant benefits legislation and Harrow’s Council Tax Support policy, principles and procedures
- Good IT knowledge including Microsoft packages such as Excel
- Experience of Housing Benefit/Council Tax Benefit/Support assessment work in a back office environment
- Experience of dealing effectively and courteously with members of the public, especially irate claimants
- Experience of using a PC to update records and extract information. Willingness & ability to use and develop further new skills to download data and to manipulate it into usable formats
- Ability to work in a performance environment and to achieve set targets including for accuracy
- Good communication skills both oral and written including the ability to draft non standard replies to correspondence and reports
- Ability to create and maintain good working relationships with other departments/sections and outside agencies, eg DWP
- Ability to work on own initiative or as part of team
- Effective organisational skills and experience of prioritising own workload with minimum supervision and to set deadlines
