Welcome to The Manchester Grammar School, and thank you for your interest in joining us.

Our history dates back to the time of Henry VIII, when The Manchester Grammar School was founded in 1515 by
Hugh Oldham, Bishop of Exeter, to provide ‘good learning’ for boys from all economic backgrounds across
Manchester.

The School proceeded to build a reputation as one of the country’s leading educational establishments, a position
it still holds today as an independent day school. Much has changed in the intervening five hundred years, but our
core mission to educate the brightest young men in the North of England regardless of their social, cultural,
religious and financial background, has not.

The Manchester Grammar School is in the heart of Manchester, close to Rusholme and Moss Side. We are very
proud of the diversity of our pupil body and are actively looking to diversify the staff body further.

We aim to teach boys to think for themselves and to develop a life-long love of learning. Lessons are taught by
examination syllabuses, offering our students the best preparation for the very top universities, both in this country
and abroad.

There is, however, much more to an MGS education than what happens in the classroom. What makes this School
truly special is the outstanding achievement of our pupils in areas such as sport, music and drama, and in keeping

**THE ROLE**

We are seeking to appoint, from 1 September 2023, a dynamic, creative, flexible individual to join our Junior

School as Deputy Head.

children. The person appointed would be expected to make a significant contribution to the co-curricular life

of the School.

**Deputy Head of Junior School - job description**

Within the Junior School we have two Deputy Heads, who work closely together across both pastoral and

academic elements of the role. This ensures rigorous, ongoing professional development, enabling both

deputies to gain a range of experience in preparation for future Headship.

The Deputy Head of the MGS Junior School will therefore be required, at some point, to cover a wide range of

responsibilities. Whilst this job description gives an indication of the range of responsibilities covered by the

deputies, it should not be regarded as definitive. Specific duties include:

- The quality control of report writing, preparing staff and ensuring the systems are in place
- Performance review and line management of TAs, including the creation of their timetables
- Assessment and Tracking - internal and InCAS. A comprehensive knowledge of inputting data and
- its subsequent analysis is required alongside the ability to lead pupil progress meetings- New staff induction and trainee mentor
- Learning support and SEND liaison
- Liaison with the Computing Services Department
- Overseeing the use of Senior School prefects within the Junior School
- Management of cover timetables and ensuring suitable work has been set
- Management of the Outreach programme and liaison with other local schools for staff professional
- development and for pupil opportunities- Overseeing the detailed process for organising trips, including residentials and overseas visits,
- across all year groups- Carrying out the duties of the Fire Safety Officer
- Organising and maintaining the co-curricular timetable and tracking systems
- Delivering topical weekly assemblies, including those of special significance
- Being involved in Senior School meetings and committees
- Being available from 8am for meetings
- Attending all Junior School events
- Being part of the late night rota - at least once per week
- Being involved in assessment for entry into the Junior School
- Leading Junior School tours for prospective families
- General marketing initiatives including management of the Junior School social media
- Regular duties e.g. break duty
- Being part of the evaluation and creation of development plans
- Covering the role of Head if they are off-site
- Leading on staff meetings and briefings in the Head’s absence
- Being available to deal with disciplinary, pastoral and safeguarding issues
- DSL role and involvement with CPOMS
- Monitoring of break time behaviour room
- Some teaching commitment (non-class based)
