**Mental Health Practitioner - job description**
Job Title: Mental Health Practitioner
Responsible to: The Bognor Makerspace Board of Directors
Responsible for: Peer mentors, trainee occupational therapists and other relevant staff
**Background**
A makerspace is a relatively new concept; it is a physical location where people gather to co-create, share resources and knowledge, work on projects, network, and build. The benefits to those taking part are wide-ranging: self-confidence, learning to persevere to improve skills, working together in a supportive team environment, combating loneliness and exclusion, improving wellbeing and mental health through creative expression, making new friends and sharing in setting and successfully completing projects. The Bognor Makerspace is housed in a large warehouse which is being steadily developed to provide exciting and adaptable spaces that offer scope for a range of activities. It was set up in October 2020 by a partnership of the Aldingbourne Trust (an established charity) and Making Theatre Gaining Skills (a community interest company set up in 2013). Both companies share a commitment to establishing the Makerspace as an inclusive community resource and have considerable experience of working with marginalised communities.
**Place of work**
The Bognor Makerspace, 58-60 Longford Road, Bognor Regis, West Sussex. PO21 1AG
**Purpose of role**
The aim is to establish an effective support structure that can be fully integrated into the life of the Makerspace through the engagement of a qualified and experienced mental health practitioner. Working closely with both Primary and Secondary mental health practitioners, the Community Enablement team and others, the practitioner will help to deliver an innovative schedule of therapeutic activities, contribute to the development of a mental health support action plan and offer an effective route for referral, engagement and progression within a context of creative community activities.
This exciting new role will suit someone who is a self-starter with a responsible, resilient and resourceful approach. The role will be pivotal in setting up and maintaining an effective mental health support plan, providing services and activities for the community. You will be involved in helping to shape and launch new activities and events and establishing new partnerships.
The successful applicant is likely to have significant experience of working in the community with a wide group of people with complex mental health difficulties. You will need a positive approach to team working and be confident and able to work well under pressure. Effective communication and leadership skills, a sound clinical knowledge base, and a commitment to caring for patients in the community must be demonstrated.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Acting as a link between referral agencies including the Bedale Clinic, Pathfinder and United Response
- To be welcoming and inclusive to a diverse range of Makerspace users, dealing sensitively and appropriately with complex and challenging issues that may present.
