**Job description**:
Reporting to the Director of Investigations, you will lead a busy ICO Investigations department, developing and implementing strategy for their activity, with responsibility for undertaking regulatory investigation and enforcement action both nationally and internationally.

You will be primarily focused on leading the High Priority Inquiries Department and may include criminal and civil investigations under the Data Protection Act (DPA), Privacy of Electronic Communication Regulations, Security of Networks & Information Systems (NIS) Directive and Freedom of Information Act (FOI).

Working with other ICO teams, you will ensure a joined up approach to implementing the ICO’s regulatory powers, and oversee development and delivery of timely and high quality investigations in line with internal procedures and recognised standards.
- A key part of this role is concluding the High Priority Inquiries transformation project, providing effective leadership, managing staff in a time of significant business change and effectively delivering objectives set out in our corporate strategy.
- Develop and implement effective and appropriate strategies and activities to deliver specific objectives outlined in the ICO Information Rights Strategic Plan.
- Provide effective leadership to the teams in these areas, ensuring that staff are clear about expected standards of performance, motivated and developed to provide effective and efficient services.
- Ensure that appropriate and effective mechanisms are in place to produce and monitor key performance indicators to ensure service delivery is in line with agreed standards and senior ICO staff are appropriately briefed on key cases.
- Seek continuous improvement in all areas of responsibility. Recommend changes and manage and lead on projects and initiatives ensuring that implementation is achieved on time and in budget.
- Be fully conversant with all relevant legislation and practice for civil and criminal investigations. Ensure that unit delivery of investigations is timely and in accordance with relevant criminal law and civil investigative procedures and that high standards of evidence gathering, storage and presentation of evidence (including technical / forensic content) are maintained.
- Work with other UK, EU and other overseas regulators, including the police and National Cyber Security Centre, to ensure that, both in individual cases and more generally, a coordinated and constructive approach is adopted in cases where there is a shared regulatory interest.
- Participate on behalf of the Commissioner/ICO as directed at meetings and events where senior representation is required.
- Participate actively in relevant corporate initiatives, including the business planning process, and undertake a senior management role in matter such as internal investigations, meeting panels.
- Identify opportunities and risks to ICO reputation, and to make recommendations for improving information rights practice in targeted sectors/organisations; to brief the media / do media interviews etc on investigations and other regulatory issues.
- Act as Information Asset Manager, with the responsibility of supporting the Information Asset Owner in ensuring good information governance practice and data protection compliance obligations are understood and applied by all the staff in the department.
- Provide the Information Asset Owner (IAO) with assurance that the asset is appropriately managed in line with legal requirements, ICO standards and procedures.
