**Job Purpose**
To make a leading contribution to the British Heart Foundation Project grant “Pharmacological and dynamic-clamp narrowing of the calcium current window to inhibit human atrial early afterdepolarisations and atrial fibrillation” (BHF PG/20/10069), working primarily with human atrial cells and tissues. Specifically, the job requires expert knowledge in whole-cell-patch clamp techniques. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project, as opportunities allow.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI):

1. Make a leading contribution to planning and conducting assigned research under the supervision of the PI and in accordance with the project deliverables and SCMH research strategy.
2. Undertake experiments, data analyses, literature reviews, and draft manuscript writing pertaining to the work outlined in the above grant, including patch-clamp experiments, and assisting with human atrial tissue collection and cell isolation.
3. Be responsible for safety management related to the organisation and running of laboratory and/or experimental techniques, equipment and processes as appropriate.
4. Document research output including timely analysis and interpretation of all data, carefully maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers.
5. Present work at international and national conferences, internal and external seminars and workshops, to develop and enhance our research profile.
6. Contribute to the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
7. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops across the research School/College/University and wider community (e.g. academic and industrial partners).
8. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including budget and expenditure monitoring, and stock control.
9. Contribute to outreach and recruitment activities of the University of Glasgow.
10. Carry out modest teaching activities (e.g. demonstrating etc) and associated administration as assigned by the Director of SCMH and in consultation with the PI.
11. Engage in personal, professional and career development to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
12. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Director of School and/or PI.
13. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s International profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan ‘Inspiring People Changing the World’.
These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply highlight a number of major tasks which the staff member may reasonably be expected to perform.
For appointment at grade 7:

14. Perform the above duties with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to planning, funding, collaborating and publishing research, and mentoring colleagues.
16. Develop and enhance your research profile and reputation, and that of SCMH, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint published research of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit and gathering indicators of esteem.
17. Contribute to identifying potential funding sources and assist in developing proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**-A2. Specialist theoretical and practical experience of patch-clamp technique.

**Desirable**
B1 Specialist theoretical and practical experience of cardiac isolated tissue or myocyte electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging.
B2 Specialist theoretical and practical experience of Langendorff-perfused heart electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging.

**Essential**
A4 An awarded Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
