**Job Purpose**
To develop and lead research of international standard in the area of colorectal surgical research. You will establish an independent research profile and distinctive research programme, delivering internationally recognised research outputs, and securing substantial external funding, including as Principal Investigator. Contribute as appropriate to School/College/University knowledge exchange and management/administrative activities..
To make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School and College through leading and contributing to research of international standard, high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and providing academic leadership and management within the School.
To contribute to clinical care commensurate with the above and contributing to service developments in Surgery (located at Glasgow Royal Infirmary), under an NHS honorary contract at Consultant level.
It is anticipated that the post will be 50:50 academic/clinical responsibility.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. To lead a programme of national and international quality research, predominantly in colorectal cancer & related surgery.
2. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of the School research strategy.
3. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.
-6. Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School and the College and University.
7. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.
8. To present research findings at national and international conferences and enhance the research profile of own research group, the School, and the University.
9. To have an established, and further develop, a record of publishing in high impact international peer reviewed journals.
11. To contribute to clinical service provision at the level of Honorary Consultant in Surgery within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, as agreed with the NHS Colorectal Clinical Management.
12. Ensure compliance with annual appraisal and GMC/GDC NHS revalidation. Participation in NHS/University Joint Appraisal Scheme is a condition of employment for all medical academic staff. In accordance with the Follett Report recommendations participation in a joint appraisal arrangement will be agreed locally.
13. Teaching Activities to include to lead and devise novel projects and lead junior staff in the supervision of undergraduate students; to keep a proactive role in the planning and delivery of undergraduate teaching; to deliver teaching at a level appropriate to your audience and so enhance learning.
14. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
15. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
16. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

**Knowledge / Qualifications**

**Essential**:
A2. Requisite clinical qualification and certification for clinical practice at Consultant level in the UK i.e. a basic medical degree and MRCP (UK) or equivalent, be on the specialist register for your discipline with relevant and enduring membership of the General Medical Council.
A3. Specialist FRCS in Colorectal surgery

B1. Where appropriate a post graduate certificate in academic practice.
B2. A sound understanding of health and safety issues surrounding your research.
B3. An understanding and experience of colorectal cancer

C1. Proven ability to plan and efficiently lead staff and deploy resources in support of major research and, where appropriate, teaching activities.
C2. Proven ability to develop new research programmes, techniques and methodologies.
C3. Ability to coach and mentor more junior staff in your team and to assist them in their career development.
C4. Excellent communication skills which enable you to communicate complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences both orally and in writing.
C5. A proven track record in securing external funding.
C6. High quality clinical skills in the treatment of the cancers.
C7. Relevant and enduring membership of General Medical Council/General Dental Council.
C8. Recognised expertise in Surgery & Colorectal cancer to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.

**Desirable**:

D1. Evidence of cross-discipline and/or multi-institutional collaborations.
