The Role

The School of Natural and Environmental Sciences are seeking to recruit a Research Assistant / Associate in Rural Innovation to work on National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise Projects.

Your main area of responsibility will be to undertake research and facilitation activity for NICRE innovation projects in the Northeast of England. Together partners, these innovation projects combine theory and practice to catalyse new ways of thinking and support the development of new products, services and practices that provide tangible benefits to rural businesses and communities.

Your role will entail stimulating and managing a portfolio of innovative pilot and demonstration projects and carrying out associated applied/action research and evidence support. The projects involve a range of partners from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors and involve learning through place
- or sector-based interventions around key (societal) challenges. Part of your role will be to liaise with partners to complete existing projects and to generate ideas for, and take forward, new innovation projects.

You will also provide support for the development of business cases for funding and associated partnerships in support of the regional and national work of NICRE.

NICRE undertakes research and knowledge exchange to inform policy, foster the innovation and resilience of rural businesses, and unlock the potential of rural economies across the UK. It is funded by Research England and founding University Partners. NICRE builds on three leading centres of expertise: Newcastle University’s Centre for Rural Economy and Business School, the Enterprise Research Centre at Warwick and the Countryside and Community Research Institute at Gloucestershire and Royal Agricultural Universities. It involves a partnership between Universities, Government departments, local authorities and enterprise partnerships, businesses organisations, rural stakeholders, and enterprises. This post is available on a part time basis on a fixed term contract of 8 Months

Key Accountabilities
Manage, catalyse, conduct, and monitor progress of innovation projects
Maintain/ develop effective relationships and engagement with key stakeholders (practitioners, communities, policy staff, other academics)
Liaise with other NICRE research and innovation associates and project leads and help oversee the overall portfolio of projects
Support partnership and business case development linked to emerging funding prospects and innovation activities regionally and nationally
Determine appropriate frameworks, methods and techniques for researching the conditions and dynamics of innovation project work
Undertake research and analysis in support of local rural development and regional evidence base
Contribute to, and lead, the writing-up of research for high-quality journal publications and other dissemination outputs, for example in evidence submissions, conferences, policy workshops, blogs, web-based resources etc
Capture and share learning from innovation projects and evidence of the associated impacts, via quantitative or qualitative measures, case studies and preparation of impact statements
Facilitate links between innovation projects and research expertise within the University
Organise knowledge exchange events with communities, businesses, their representatives and policy makers and help to host discussions and facilitate productive debate
To work alongside academic staff and Newcastle University’s other National Innovation Centres, as necessary. to support a pipeline of development opportunities for NICRE and its partners, as well as NICRE’s key academic partners (Warwick, Gloucester, RAU)
Attend NICRE management and research meetings and assist with the day-to-day running of research and innovation activities, reporting and other operational matters
Work with NICRE’s lead academics and management team, to support, develop and implement strategies for the achie
