The Role
An exciting research position is available in the Centre for Rural Economy in Newcastle University.
We are looking for a researcher who is interested in working at the interface of social science and policy is required to support two pan European projects. These projects seek to understand norms and behaviour in rural areas, how they are formed and how they can be transformed.
You will be involved in qualitative interviews, focus groups, workshops and working with Living Labs. You will be responsible for benchmarking national and European policy documents and governance frameworks.
There will be scope for the Research Fellow to be part of international rural social science fora, including the European Society for Rural Sociology, the International Rural Studies Association, and the Trans-Atlantic Rural Research Network (TARRN). The Research Fellow could have the opportunity to contribute to the teaching of the Centre for Rural Economy.

Key Accountabilities
Carry out field work collecting qualitative data from stakeholders and analysing results
Benchmarking national and EU policy documents
Writing academic papers, policy briefs, fact sheets and EU Practice Abstracts
Assist with administrative duties required for the research projects
Contribute, as appropriate, to other research, teaching and engagement activities within the School.
The Person
Willing and able to participate in teaching, research and fieldwork activities, occasionally including planned work out of normal office hours
Willing to assist with administrative requirements of the projects
Willingness to undertake frequent travel within the UK, in particular to European destinations, for project meetings and fieldwork.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
PhD in a relevant social science discipline such as sociology, political science, human geography, social policy, planning or economics, or demonstrated research track record of five years or more.
Strong theoretical competence
Strong methodological competence (qualitative, and quantitative skills desirable)
High-quality written and oral communication skills in the English language
Desirable
A knowledge of rural/ agricultural issues in some context (such as European, or American, or UK, or African etc.)
Previous experience of working on a research project, where initiative was used
Strong publication record that demonstrates ability to publish in leading journals and the potential to develop this record
Knowledge of EU policy documents
Data processing and analysis skills including experience with (e.g) NVivo, R, Stata, SPSS
Attributes and Behaviour
Enthusiastic, self-motivated researcher able to develop ideas for new projects and funding streams
A demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment
A proven or emerging track record of self-motivated progress in academic research, including publication in peer-reviewed journals
