The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Grade F Research Assistant/Associate initially until 31st January 2024. The role is offered on a part-time/flexible basis of 7.4 hours per week (0.2 FTE).

The role is designed to support the planning, delivery and evaluation of a range of applied research and business engagement activities which engage with the regional ecosystem to help small businesses in the North East of England to flourish. This involves working with the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators and Lead Facilitator and liaising with multiple external stakeholders including the Federation of Small Businesses, Newcastle City Council, North of Tyne Combined Authority and a number of larger organisations in the region to successfully coordinate a portfolio of activities, working closely with any funder to ensure delivery of a successful project that fully meets the funder’s criteria.

You will be based within Newcastle University Business School.

Key Accountabilities
Support the delivery of the ‘Captured’ Project and other applied research and business engagement activities which engage with the regional ecosystem to help small businesses in the North East of England to flourish. This will include using a range of in-person and online participatory action research approaches and will include co-leading the Your Enterprise and Commercialise without Compromise programmes.
Facilitate/co-facilitate workshops where the PI or Lead Facilitator is unavailable to attend. This includes co-facilitation of the ‘Your Enterprise’ programme which requires a female facilitator.
To support collection and analysis of data and ensure effective data management in line with project objectives, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and in line with ethical protocols. This will include analysing existing survey, disseminating existing survey results to co-researchers and participants, developing interview protocols, conducting and analysing semi-structured interviews.
Collate baseline data, administer follow-up research questionnaires and arrange follow-up interviews in liaison with the PI and other research staff.
Work with the PI and Lead Facilitator to co-develop research publication opportunities aimed at conferences and academic journals.
Identify research and engagement opportunities that accord with the Business School’s Strategy, the University’s Engagement and Place strategy and the strategy of the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprises. Support future funding bids including partner liaison.
Develop, with advice, awareness of own professional development needs, and a personal development strategy.
To carry out other duties, as defined by the PI, which support the successful achievement of Business School vision and strategy.

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
In-depth knowledge of partnership working between academia and business and understanding of ‘best practice’ approaches to such collaboration and engagement.
An awareness of the North East’s small business communities and networks.
Excellent interpersonal, team working and communication skills.
Excellent organisational skills including ability to prioritise tasks and successfully work to deadlines.
Experience of designing and leading cross-and inter-disciplinary participatory research/ workshops and events (on-line and face-to-face).
