The post-holders will have the opportunity to continue to develop their surgical skills and to participate in quality improvement and teaching within the department.

This post works as part of a combined surgical Rota. The post holder will be expected to work in their own specialty (General Surgery/Urology) during the normal working day shift, and hold the on-call bleep for both specialities when on call (long day/weekend day/ night shifts)

Whilst on duty the post holder has clinical and professional responsibility for their patients. It is also the duty of the post holder to:

- Keep patients (and/or their careers as appropriate) informed about their condition.
- Involve patients and/or their carers if appropriate in decision making about their treatment.
- Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council and comply in particular with the GMC’s guidance on‘Good Medical Practice’

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job Description such as:

- The keeping of records and the provision of reports
- The proper delegation of tasks
- Maintaining skills and knowledge

Clinical Responsibilities
- To provide medical care to patients as required ensuring that the appropriate standards of care are delivered through a multidisciplinary and Hospital at Night team.
- To maintain patient confidentiality and ensure that personal access to information systems is secure from others.
- To maintain a safe environment for patient and colleagues.
- To ensure that accurate records of care are maintained, and that information is accurately and appropriately communicated to other professionals as required.
- To attend the whole range of clinical delivery settings (OPD, Endoscopy, Theatres, Wards etc.)
- To participate in a combined surgery on call rota covering General Surgery and Urology ensuring that swaps that are arranged are agreed with the Consultant, and details given to Medical Workforce Department and Switchboard.

Professional Responsibilities
- To maintain own professional registration through CPD as required by GMC and the medical colleges.
- To comply with professional codes of conduct as defined by the GMC
- To participate in clinical audit and research as agreed with Consultants
- To support the training of pre and post registration doctors and other healthcare professional as appropriate.
