Gene expression starts with transcription, the step when RNA is synthesised. In all biological systems, the post-transcriptional regulation of RNA allows enormous regulatory flexibility and diversity in gene expression. In bacteria, small non-coding regulatory RNA molecules (sRNAs) play a pivotal role in post-transcriptional regulation of messenger RNA (mRNA), which serves as a template for translation, the step when proteins that carry out cellular functions are synthesised. sRNAs determine whether the targeted mRNAs are destined for translation, translational repression, or degradation.

Active growth is a luxury that bacteria can only occasionally afford. This is mainly due to the limited availability of nutrients, but also inflicted by diverse abiotic and biotic stress factors. Hence, growth-arrested bacteria are prevalent in many environments and in host-contexts during infection, where they are often recalcitrant to antibacterial treatments.

This Research Associate post forms part of a collaborative BBSRC funded project with Professor Jörg Vogel (University of Würzburg) aiming to obtain greater insights into what extent post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression underpins survival, competitiveness, and antibiotic-recalcitrance of growth-arrested bacteria and to what extent the mechanisms of post-transcriptional regulation differ between actively-growing and growth-arrested bacteria.

This position represents an excellent opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge RNA biology research in two world-leading laboratories.

**Duties and responsibilities**:
The post is funded by the BBSRC to investigate the gene regulatory networks and mechanisms of gene regulation in growth-arrested bacteria by molecular and ‘omics’ methods. You will work closely with another PDRA in the group. You will be responsible for identify and conducting experiments pertinent to uncovering transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene regulatory processes in growth-arrested bacteria. You will generate novel mutant bacterial strains as required and assess the suitability of these for further analysis. You will contribute to the smooth running of the laboratory and help to train, support and supervise other members of the group as required.

**Essential requirements**:

- **Research Associate**: Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Molecular Bacteriology or a closely related discipline.
- ** Research Assistant**: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Molecular Bacteriology or a closely related discipline
- Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals
- Publication in relevant and refereed journals
- Computer literate with an excellent knowledge of different computer programs with experience in data presentation and statistical analyses
- Experience with the use of software for making biological drawings and figures (e.g., Adobe suite, Biorender etc.)

**Further information**:
This is a Full Time and Fixed Term post until April 2024 based at South Kensington Campus.

Willingness to work out of normal working hours (including weekends) if the requirements of the project demand is expected.-
