About St Giles
St Giles Trust is a Charity helping people facing severe disadvantage to find jobs, homes and the right support they need. We help them to become positive contributors to local communities and wider society. We passionately believe everybody is capable of changing their lives. Our mission is we empower people to overcome injustices for themselves, their families, and their local communities - we achieve this through offering support from someone who has been there. Our peer-led services form the backbone of our work.

About this exciting opportunity
United2Change began from a small group of parents during the pandemic. Our passion is to prepare black young people for real world decision making, helping to build their confidence and self-esteem allowing them to succeed. We now work with over 150 young people who aspire to be the best they can be and have real opportunities to excel in life. We want to encourage and prepare young people to become future leaders, role models from within their own communities and showcase positivity. We believe that young people can take ownership of their lives and communities in a positive way.

Background
Young people from the Grangetown Somali Community have been working together for over 2 years. This has grown from weekly virtual sessions during the pandemic in response to isolation, loneliness, discrimination, the challenges of home-based education, and exploring aspirations, use of social-media, friendships, language, culture, safety, etc.

Young people are at the heart of the decision making - informally being involved in planning, delivery of activities virtually and face to face. Young people have consulted on priorities for their community and have co-designed this project together with St Giles Cymru & United2Change.

As a direct result of their own experiences Young People want to identify role models in their community, young people like themselves, to be trained to support them to co-ordinate social action, set up a formal Children and Young People’s committee and feed into United2Change governance working closely with the adults and elders.

As a result, Young People will be trained, support others, lead sessions, participate in sessions, agree programmes and campaigns, learn how to organise events, budgets, public speaking - leading by example.

What we are looking for:
We require applicants with proven ability to engage individuals from Somali community, a flexible working approach and strong commitment to helping socially excluded people. You will need to be highly organised and able to work on your own initiative.

This post is exempt under the Equality Act (2010), Part 1, Schedule 9

In return, you can expect a competitive salary, generous leave allowance, staff pension, flexible working, a mentoring programme, an advice and counselling service, access to clinical supervisions, season ticket loan and much more.

As an organisation that works with children and adults at risk we are committed to safeguarding, protecting and promoting the safety of our clients. An enhanced DBS check with barred list is required for all successful applicants.

Closing date: 11pm, 9 January 2023. Interview date: 18 January 2023 Cardiff.
