**Job summary**:

- Exciting opportunities are available for lawyers, economists, litigators, investigators, consultants or advisers with experience of complex enforcement or regulatory cases, who have excellent analytical and communication skills, who wish to fulfil a role that is both intellectually stimulating and rewarding, playing a key role in making a positive difference to the UK economy and society. If this sounds intriguing, then the position of Principal Case Officer at one of the world's top competition and consumer agencies could be the next exciting step in your career.**Job description**:
Within this position you will play a central role investigating one or more suspected competition law infringements. You will help gather and analyse factual and economic evidence, making appropriate and analytically robust conclusions. You will also prepare key documents and will be involved in project strategy, scoping and planning. With senior guidance and support, you will take lead responsibility for the delivery of individual elements of the investigation (including procedural aspects of certain workstreams) and, as required, for the work and staff management of one or more Project Officers.

Within the Antitrust and Cartels enforcement teams, you may also get involved in the development of cartel and antitrust policy at a national and international level and have opportunities to represent the CMA externally. You may also get the opportunity to work or gain experience in other areas of the CMA’s work, including market studies, market investigations, merger investigations, and regulatory appeals.

In order to succeed in this role you will need to provide demonstrable experience of working as a lawyer, economist, litigator, investigator, consultant or adviser with knowledge of complex enforcement or regulatory cases. Complex analytical work will be familiar to you, compounding this with a set of excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to successfully organise and prioritise work to meet expected work standards and deadlines.

**Person specification**:
Your detailed responsibilities will be:
**Delivery**
- Driving the overall investigation and individual workstreams forward on a day-to-day basis, including identifying ways to overcome obstacles and potential delays and working with colleagues and external stakeholders to ensure adherence to the timetable and deadlines.
- Identifying, recording and proactively managing risks, taking action where necessary and escalating as appropriate.
- Drafting a wide range of internal and external documents, including formal correspondence with parties to the investigation, internal papers and submissions and contributing to major investigation outputs such as statements of objections and infringement decisions. Reviewing documents for quality, coherence, accuracy and confidentiality.
- Delivering key investigatory steps, such as preparing formal requests for information and documents and contributing to planning and carrying out unannounced inspections of premises (‘dawn-raids’) and witness interviews.
- Supporting a Director and Assistant Director in defining the scope of an investigation, taking account of the relevant issues, the wider policy context and the resourcing implications.
- Ensuring that appropriate processes are implemented for managing and organising large amounts of evidence and information, filing and distributing project documents, the disclosure of material to external parties and the identification and protection of confidential information.
- Working with senior colleagues to develop a pipeline of future enforcement cases.
- Contributing to the development of policy, procedure and best practice within the CMA.

**Substantive analysis**
- Reviewing and analysing complex factual and economic evidence from a variety of sources to identify relevant materials, make appropriate connections and arrive at well-reasoned and analytically robust conclusions.
- Contributing to ensuring that decisions on the investigation are based on clear, accurate, well-reasoned, researched, and evidence-based analysis, working with lawyers, economists and other case team members as appropriate.

**Management and leadership**
- Managing the allocation of work to team members in a way that makes the most of their specialist skills, knowledge and abilities and contributes to their professional and personal development. Day to day supervision of work, providing feedback and support as appropriate.
