**Job summary**:
The CMA is the UK’s world-leading government body established to make sure competition works in consumers’ favour and businesses treat their customers fairly. Be it taking enforcement action against drug firms accused of overcharging the NHS, investigating concerns about hotel booking websites’ practices, or conducting major studies into whether vulnerable consumers are being ripped off by certain industries, what we do really matters.

Being a Case Officer at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is an exciting opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge, and career while contributing to a fairer and more competitive UK economy.

The CMA's aim is to promote competitive markets and combat unfair behaviour to benefit individuals, businesses, and the UK economy. Our law enforcement teams play a crucial role in achieving this by investigating suspected anti-competitive arrangements, such as price fixing, bid rigging, market sharing, and abuses of dominant positions under UK competition law.

**Job description**:
As part of your role, you will conduct in-depth research and analysis, review evidence, and produce a wide range of formal and concise documents, including agendas, minutes, presentations, reports, correspondence, and internal and external case papers. You will also ensure that administrative and organisational tasks, such as internal and external meetings, visits, and hearings, are efficiently carried out and documented.

We currently have investigations in the digital and pharmaceutical sectors and others involving labour markets, replica football kits, financial services, demolition services, the recycling of end-of-life vehicles, and the supply of fragrances. There may also be opportunities to work on projects involving market-wide studies and investigations, consumer protection, and investigating mergers.

The CMA prides itself on being a great place to work and strives to ensure that staff have the opportunity to grow and expand their skills portfolio. As well as being a hugely rewarding, diverse and stimulating place to work, you will have an opportunity to work for the public good whilst stretching and developing yourself in doing so.

**Person specification**:
The key responsibilities will include:
**Delivery**:
1. Support the Principal Case Officer to run the case in a way that ensures due process is followed, that all stakeholders are treated fairly and that the case meets the CMA’s transparency standards.

2. Identify relevant sources of information and carry out in-depth research as necessary to contribute to the team’s understanding of the issues in the case, always mindful of the applicable legal framework.

3. Assist with evidence gathering, including planning and executing inspections.

4. Review evidence (including systematically piecing together evidence and information gathered from disparate sources during an investigation to understand the full evidential picture).

5. Analyse evidence and information in detail to establish the facts in the case, always keeping in mind the applicable legal framework.

6. Produce a wide range of formal and concise documents to include items such as agendas, minutes, presentations, analysis, summaries of meetings, reports, correspondence, as well as internal and external case papers. This will also include reviewing materials for quality, accuracy and confidentiality.

7. Ensure that administrative and organisational tasks including internal and external meetings on cases, visits and hearings are efficiently carried out and documented.

8. Ensure accurate electronic and hard copy distribution of papers, managing filing systems for correspondence, make sure documents and case records are established and maintained.

9. Develop and implement processes for the disclosure of material to external parties, ensuring the identification and protection of confidential information.

10. Take responsibility for own work (and if applicable, own workstream), including delivery to time, quality and within budget, and identify risks and escalate as appropriate.

11. Assist the Directorate’s management team as required.

**Stakeholder relationships**:
1. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with both the case team and others across the CMA, and with external stakeholders.

2. Opportunities to represent the CMA by acting as lead point of contact for some external parties.

**Development and leader
