**Job description**:
The Director General (DG) heads up an organisation delivering 4 million immigration decisions and 6 million passports each year. The DG’s office is small and friendly team who support the Director General in their day-to-day role as well as assisting in the delivery of the organisation’s priorities.
This is an exciting opportunity to provide support to the Director General of Customer Services Capability and will provide a unique opportunity to see how the top of the Home Office operates, with a great insight into senior decision making.
The successful applicant will be someone that is comfortable operating in a high profile, fast paced and challenging environment where excellent communication skills are essential. No two days are the same and you should be comfortable working with ambiguity and switch focus. This is however an immensely rewarding role where you will be given the opportunity to be involved with exciting and high-profile issues with the potential to be at the forefront of the development of policy and operations across the Home Office.
**Person specification**:
This role will be to provide direct support to the Director General as part of the immediate Private Office team.
Whilst not an exhaustive list the post holder will be responsible for the following duties:
- Commissioning papers where appropriate and working with the rest of the Private Office to ensure the Director General (DG) has sight of these prior to calls, confidently negotiating extensions to deadlines where needed.
- Act as a key interface between the Director General and the Department, where needed providing their feedback on advice and helping to steer the work of their directorate. Effectively managing and prioritising workload of the principle and the flow of work between the Department and their principle.
- Analysing advice provided by officials to ensure that the DG’s attention is drawn to key points and decisions required and that they receive appropriate advice to support their decision making and advice, providing high quality feedback to officials on the view of the DG.
- Building and maintaining effective relationships with other Private Offices (both in Home Office and across Government), officials and stakeholders.
- Drafting communications and correspondence as required, and quality-assuring the work of others.
- Provide cover to the Assistant Private Secretary who leads on the management of the Director General’s busy diary. Duties will include arranging meetings, booking meeting rooms and organising visitor passes as required. The post holder will need to ensure that requests for meetings are dealt with quickly and appropriately, and where the DG is unable to attend, that a suitable delegate is identified to attend in their place.
**Essential Criteria**:
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment and an ability to provide written and oral briefings to senior members of the team.
- Ability to quickly digest and understand complex information.
- Experience working in the Private Office of a senior board member in a public sector environment including exposure to government ministers.
- Ability to build and maintain networks with a variety of stakeholders and communicate at different levels.
**Desirable Criteria**:
- Understanding of UK Immigration legislation and procedures with particular focus on asylum.
