The post holder will participate in, promote and maintain efficient and effective delivery of a Diagnostic Imaging service throughout the Trust, whilst maintaining a quality service. You will also providing general support to Imaging Department staff and patients.

The department operates 7 day working with service provision to include evenings and weekends and you will be expected to participate in this rota.

Applicants should have a broad understanding of Imaging procedures and be able to assist with Radiological and Radiographic examinations.

The post holder will participate in, promote and maintain efficient and effective delivery of a Diagnostic Imaging service throughout the Trust, whilst maintaining a quality service. You will also providing general support to Imaging Department staff and patients.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 286,700, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities. Work is also well underway on its multi-million pound new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre which will house a new Emergency Department (including Children’s Emergency Department), co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Unit and Urgent Care Centre. This is scheduled for completion this year.

Principal Duties
- To assist with a variety of examinations in order to provide a high quality service as part of the imaging team
- To provide high standards of patient care
- Some organisation of workload from a variety of referral pathways to meet the needs of the service
- To assist with the provision of a clean and tidy environment throughout the department
- To observe all statutory regulations, Trust and department policies with particular reference to Health and Safety at Work Act and Radiation Protection

Professional
- Accountable for own professional activities within the limitations of personal expertise and agreed knowledge and skills framework
- Work within a pressurised environment due to unpredictable workloads and patient demands
- Work within a multidisciplinary team to promote cross-boundary working
- Encourage and maintain good working relationships with other departments and specialities and have a flexible approach to work, ensuring departmental efficiency
- Maintain a smart and professional image
- To act in a professional and sympathetic manner with patients and relatives whilst maintaining the patients’ privacy, dignity and confidentiality
- Take appropriate action in an emergency situation
- To take a flexible approach to 7 day working as required

Clinical / Technical
- To assist with radiological and radiographic procedures
- To maintain patient dignity
- To assist with toileting / dressing / patient care as required
- To care for patients in the department assisting them with their needs
- To collect and return patients from wards when required
- To maintain room stock levels
- To appropriately put away and store stock and pharmacy items, using stock rotation and correct completion of documentation
- To assist with the maintenance of a clean and tidy environment including changing rooms, and clinical rooms
- To maintain patient confidentiality at all times, using Caldecott Principles
- To demonstrate good communication skills
- To participate in own individual performance review (IPR) as per Trust policy
- To observe Local Rules for ionising radiation and other policies
- To work within Nuclear medicine, assisting with procedures and dealing with radioactive body fluids as per policy
- May have to deal with frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions i.e. odours, body fluids and verbal aggression
- May have to deal with exposure to traumatic and distressing circumstances
- May have to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods during a shift
- When working in Breast Imaging:
- to develop knowledge of breast screening and symptomatic pathways, working closely with Radiographers and Breast Care nurses
- to request films from City and Sandwell NHS Trust and off site film store as required
- to undertake clerical duties as required, including booking and modifying imaging appointments and contacting patients accordingly
- To competently use manual handling aids as required by the Trust for the safety of both patients and staff on a daily basis
