WMG is a vibrant, cutting-edge research institution at the University of Warwick. We currently have a great opportunity for an Assistant Professor to join the Cell Instrumentation Team to conduct research in the area of battery safety. This research will help construct sensor systems to instrument cells, providing an in-depth understanding of their operation during both normal and abuse conditions.

The role will involve sensor instrumentation, lithium-ion cell characterisation, development of control algorithms and knowledge of diagnosis systems. We are looking for an experienced researcher to study cell performance, and develop the hardware and software required to evaluate cell performance. Development of novel sensing methods may include, for example but not constrained to, internal temperature sensors, gas characterisation and current sensing. This will encompass the operation of these lithium-ion cells throughout their lifetime, to better characterise safety requirements as the cells age.

All aspects of health and safety during the development and operation of lithium-ion battery technologies may be studied and used to characterise cell performance. Test fixtures, experiment methodologies and bespoke interfaces will need to be developed to deploy instrumented cells in a range of performance tests.

**JOB PURPOSE**

Undertake research in order to support the work of the department and develop and enhance its reputation, both internally and externally. Mentor colleagues with less experience and conduct individual or collaborative research projects.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**

To design and implement experimental programmes of research in the areas of LIB instrumentation and safety evaluation. To include all aspects of health and safety and liaising with technical services to delivers agreed research plans on time.

To report and publish research outcomes in both academic and industrial forums

To support other members of the team and Principal Investigator in the general management, dissemination and research/education activities of the team and Energy Directorate.

To engage with industrial/academic partners to promote our research.

To support the formulation of new research funding proposals.

**Principal Accountabilities**

**Research and Scholarship**

1. Establish a sound research base within the department in order to develop research objectives, projects and proposals.

2. Identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds to support a developing research agenda.

4. Write or contribute to publications or disseminate research findings using other appropriate media.

5. Make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events.

6. Routinely communicate complex and conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media.

**Teaching and Learning Support**

1. Could be expected to contribute to the teaching and learning programmes in the department.

2. May be expected to supervise postgraduate research students.

3. May be involved in the assessment of student knowledge.

**Administration and Other Activities**

1. Collaborate actively within and outside of the institution to complete research projects and advance thinking.

2. Undertake specific departmental roles as may be required.

3. May be required to attend departmental meetings and to participate (where necessary) in other committees and working groups within the department, the faculty and the University.

4. Participate in relevant professional activities.

5. Ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of work and, when appropriate, undertake risk assessments.

6. Participate in and develop external networks, for example to identify sources of funding, generate income, obtain projects, or build relationships for future activities.
