The Corporate Governance and Stewardship team are responsible for the UK Corporate Governance Code, Stewardship Code and Wates Principles. The team also commissions or undertakes internally additional research to ensure that the three Codes remain fit for purposeand promote high quality governance and reporting.
This is an exciting time to join the team as they will be updating the UK Corporate Governance Code and issuing a public consultation on the update and the accompanying guidance. In parallel they will continue to assess the effectiveness of reporting againstthe current Code and issue our annual review of corporate governance reporting in Autumn 2023.
The Policy Associate role is critical in supporting the Code's contribution to good corporate governance, bringing integrity and transparency to business and confidence to investment markets. Detailed analysis of reporting is required along with an understandingof policy development.
**The Role**:
The role involves**:

- Detailed and comprehensive critical analysis of the quality of corporate governance reporting by UK premium listed companies.
- Researching evidence and examples for the annual review of corporate governance reporting.
- Identifying areas of good and poor practice and supporting decision-making with evidence.
- Drafting the annual UK corporate governance reporting review and produce high quality content on areas of expertise.
- Developing expertise in different areas of the Code to support and develop policy options for future iterations of the Code, and acting as a source of knowledge on these areas
- Accompanying senior colleagues to external meetings, providing high quality briefing and records.
- Contributing to the update of the UK Corporate Governance Code, including working with some external stakeholders.

**Cross-functional working and research**
- Working on cross-organisational initiatives that promote good governance, or support organisational transformation
- Identifying and pursuing areas for research and supporting senior colleagues, research team, external consultants, academics ad advisors on delivering research projects.
- Reviewing the teams' approach to corporate governance and stewardship and contributing to policy proposals.
- Engagement with other government departments and regulators, particularly as we progress to review the Code in 2023

**The Person**:

- A degree level qualification, relevant qualification, and/or have gained relevant experience in business or governance
- An understanding of the UK corporate governance framework, and the interaction between government, regulators and stakeholders
- Understanding the requirements of company reports, in particular narrative reporting
- knowledge of policy making including how different policy options can be used to achieve objectives
- Ability to manage priorities, own workload and meet tight deadlines
- Ability to draft clearly for a professional and public audience
- Have a good standard of written and verbal communication
- Be comfortable working in a changing business and policy environment

You should have the ability to:

- communicate findings of analysis accurately and succinctly both in writing and orally
- Understand how findings of analysis can support future policy making
- Identification of trends and key issues and resulting in convincing recommendations.
- Communicate existing and new ideas confidently and recommend policy proposals to senior colleagues
- Work closely and effectively with other organisations who have interests in these areas
