**About the role**:
- As an Employee Relations Advisor, you’ll play a key role in supporting our strategic employee relations leadership team - shaping the employee relations landscape within Northern. In this role, you’ll be working to ensure we maintain strong relationships with recognised trade unions. You’ll be a key liaison between management and colleague representatives, ensuring our workforce operates within a framework of fairness, respect and mutual understanding.
- Your main responsibility will be to implement and maintain a comprehensive framework for managing employee representative councils. You’ll develop meeting plans, coordinating agendas and facilitating discussions to address employee concerns and promote collaborative decision making.
- You’ll also provide expert advice and guidance on a wide range of ER matters. Your insights will be instrumental in supporting our People team and ensuring our workforce operations remains compliant with relevant regulations and best practices.
- This isn’t a generalist HR role; this is Employee Relations. This position offers you a dynamic and challenging opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the employee experience at Northern. So, you’ll need high level resilience and the ability to communicate effectively, as you will be directly involved in strategic people change, whilst supporting to find solutions to complex industrial relations issues.

**Key responsibilities**:
- As the Employee Relations Advisors, you can expect a role that is challenging and rewarding. Here is a glimpse of what your day to day could include.
- Develop, implement, and maintain meeting plans for the Northern Rail Joint Committee and Employee Councils
- Act as the management side secretary and facilitator for Joint Committee and Employee Council meetings
- Provide expert advice on terms and conditions, agreements, and contractual obligations.
- Organise Employee Council elections and maintain databases.
- Liaise with Employee Council members, Trade Union Full Time Officers, HR Business Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers across the business.
- Support the Employee Relations Senior Leadership Team with periodic reporting, preparing Board level presentations and developing business cases.

- You’ll have exceptional communications skills, adept at steering complex interpersonal dynamics with empathy and diplomacy. You’ll have a strong ability to adapt to changing circumstances and handle multiple tasks. With your strong problem solving skills and collaborative approach, you’ll demonstrate how effectively you can address employee issues and conflicts; finding solutions that align with organisational goals. Strategic thinking and resilience are also essential attributes you possess, enabling you to navigate challenging situations and allowing for continuous learning and improvement in all that you do.

- Essential:
- Associate Member CIPD essential or working towards
- Previous experience of working within Employee Relations / Human Resources or similar
- Experience of delivering effective and innovative support for a wide variety of front line managers
- Experience in a labour intensive and unionised environment
- Experience of minute taking / note taking
- Strong organisational skills
- Ability to travel across the Northern Network
Desireable:
- A detailed knowledge of terms and conditions
- A detailed knowledge of policies & procedures
- A broad knowledge of the different directorial functions and grade group activities within Northern
