Peer support is based on the recognition that there is no better person to support people towards personalized recovery and emotional well-being than someone who has had a shared experience as that individual.

The Peer Support Worker will be assigned to the Adult Acute Inpatient Wards and the Matron and Smoking Cessation Practitioner will provide supervision, support and managerial input throughout your time with us.

The PSW will undertake a full induction to the ward areas and be provided with all statutory and mandatory training as any substantive staff member is required to undertake working in this area.

NSCHT Acute Inpatients have joined a National project to support inpatients to Quit Smoking.

This is a real challenge in Acute Mental Health Wards as a high proportion >50% of the inpatient population smoke. Also they are admitted to hospital at a time of Mental Health Crisis and often under the Mental Health Act due to their inability to keep themselves safe. Therefore willingness to stop smoking is rarely a priority for them.

A PSW will provide that additional support role to our inpatient population and maybe the preferred contact for some of our patients which can support engagement and personalized recovery.
