- Job description- This is an exciting opportunity to provide technical and business leadership to a front-line team that regulate permitted sites, respond to incidents and tackle non-compliant waste activity across Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
You will work within our team of Environment Officers using policy, data, evidence and intelligence to assist the Team Leader set work priorities, monitor performance and ensure delivery against our targets. You will also support Environment Officers with personal development, provide technical advice, quality checks, mentoring and leadership.
You will work closely with other area and national teams to improve your own knowledge and disseminate this to help our officers achieve compliance at Permitted sites. Our increased scrutiny of other regimes, like hazardous waste and waste carriers, will be also require your guidance and oversight.
You will be keen to take on area lead roles which will benefit the team and the area as a whole as you expand your knowledge in these key areas and collaborate with others to improve service delivery.
We’ll need you to innovate to find better ways of doing things and work with the team to embed changes.
You’ll need to understand our customers, both those we regulate and local communities, to improve how we work with and for them. We know we can’t do everything at all times, so the ability to ensure that activity follows funding is vital, as is the skill of explaining this to stakeholders who may disagree.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- The Brampton Team are primarily based at Bedford Office and includes officers with new starters to over 20 years experience. We regulate approximately 150 operators and deal with other waste activities in area. We are a friendly team who value each other and are keen to develop.
Experience/skills required- We are looking for someone who is able to:

- Provide and embrace fresh ideas and knowledge to achieve our objectives.
- Influence external customers and internal colleagues.
- Coach and mentor officers.
- Deliver environmental compliance and environmental outcomes.
- Provide technical leadership to colleagues.

You will be willing to undertake specialist/or further training when necessary.
Through all of the above they are able to make decisions that deliver tangible results and be able to remain a positive and approachable role model for the team and the Agency.
The role will be based at our Bedford or Brampton Office with field-based work carried out across our whole patch. Therefore a full UK driving licence is essential.
