We are looking for an enthusiastic assistant to join our Speech & Language Therapy team at The James Cook University Hospital. You will work with adults who have acquired speech and swallowing difficulties.

Most of your time would be spent on acute wards. Wards will include specialties such as respiratory, elderly care, gastroenterology, acute medicine, and cardiology. You will support the Speech & Language Therapist (SLT) in a range of ways to provide care around swallowing and communication in the acute setting. You will provide direct clinical work to patients under the guidance of the SLT, liaise with the multidisciplinary team and families to support in-patient management and discharge back into the community, and be required to perform patient related administrative tasks.

Training and support will be provided.
- To support and assist the SLT with the implementation and monitoring of treatment plans, always working under the direction of the SLT
- To carry out observation and information gathering to contribute to the SLT’s assessment and intervention. This will include multidisciplinary working
- To provide advice and education to patients, relatives and staff as directed by SLTs. For instance, training on how to thicken drinks, giving advice on feeding patients with dementia
- To assist with dysphagia (swallowing) assessments as required
- To undertake routine administrative tasks in line with the department (registering patients, writing notes, taking phone calls)

You can expect to be working with a wide range of patients and specialities including respiratory medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, surgery, oncology, older people’s medicine and stroke.

You will be encouraged to participate with your colleagues in service improvement, clinical governance and continuing professional development. We have excellent education facilities on site.

After you complete this one and a half day of training you will be able to explore further leadership and improvement training opportunities, we offer further in-house courses and bitesize programmes and leadership apprenticeships at level 3,5 and 7.
