The prime function of the Veterinary Services Group (SRUC VSG) is to provide a laboratory diagnostic and consultancy service to veterinary surgeons in practice in Scotland. SRUC Veterinary Services also provides formal sheep and cattle disease control and accreditation schemes. In addition, there are businesses dealing with companion animal clinical pathology (Capital Diagnostics) and analytical testing of soils, plants and animal feedstuffs.

Working under the direction of the Inverness Hub Manager;
- You will provide an effective, reliable, and efficient farm animal diagnostic and consultancy service to veterinary surgeons in practice and farmers. Key components of this work include clinical pathology reporting and telephone liaison. Practitioners are supported when investigating farm animal disease outbreaks by providing guidance on sample selection including from necropsies.
- To maintain a close working relationship with local veterinarians and farmers/crofters to facilitate data collection to inform the trends, distribution, and nature of livestock diseases in the Highlands and Islands. Through this work the VIO will contribute to the local and national disease surveillance functions of SRUC VSG.
- To investigate in detail unusual outbreaks of farm animal disease in collaboration with veterinary colleagues within SRUC and other specialist institutions.
- To contribute as required to SRUC VSG farmer education and awareness campaigns to promote animal welfare.
- To assist with the Animal Health & Welfare Management Programme by providing support to local vets and farmers/crofters.
- To participate in disease eradication and control programme being directed by the State Veterinary Service by providing full supporting laboratory services as and when required by the Scottish Government.
- To contribute to the advisory and research effort of other departments within SRUC. The VIO is encouraged to liaise with colleagues within the SRUC advisory service (particularly the specialist dairy, beef and sheep agricultural advisors, nutritionists and building advisors) to support a farm animal health advisory service in the local area.
- To contribute to teaching of vet students, including rural mixed practice rotations at University of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Help develop wildlife surveillance at the Rural and Veterinary Innovation Centre on Inverness Campus.
- To carry out any other duties delegated by the veterinary managers.
- To work for periods at other SRUC Veterinary Surveillance Hubs as necessary and as directed by the manager of SRUC Vet Services.
