Cardiff, United Kingdom BBC Full time

Job Introduction
Based in Cardiff, you will bring your passion for audio production and storytelling, as well as your experience of script-editing and working with writers and actors, to be part of an award-winning team making a wide range of drama, readings and comedy output for BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Wales and BBC Sounds.

From podcast dramas such as BBC Sounds _Limelight: Siege_, new writing for BBC Radio 4 from emerging and established dramatists, such as _Tracks,_ _Broken Colours, The Making of a Monster _and _The Lemonade Lads;_ short stories and dramatizations of existing texts such as _The Limits to Growth, Heart of Darkness_ or the novels of Thomas Hardy.

You may also be asked to help with the development, research and story-lining of factual documentaries or narrative podcast series.

Main Responsibilities
We are looking to recruit an assistant producer on a fixed term twelve month contract or attachment to work within the Cardiff audio drama team, assisting with the development and production of new audio drama, comedy and readings.

As assistant producer, you will develop new ideas and writers for radio broadcast and/or online or multiplatform use, and uncover new writing and acting talent. You will also work closely with writers on their programme pitches and, after commission, throughout the script-editing process, taking the script to the stage when it is ready for studio.

We also want to give you the skills to produce and direct output, so you can help us shape the future sound of audio drama.

You will learn how to direct drama and readings for audio, and bring your knowledge of actors to bear on casting those productions. You will also learn how to do simple editing on the BBC’s SADIE editing software and work in close collaboration with our technical producers on the sound design and final mix.

You would also be the main point of contact for the drama team’s online and digital activities, working closely with network digital teams.

You should be a passionate storyteller, eager to explore the human condition through drama. You will also need to demonstrate experience of working with writers on drama scripts and of directing professional actors.

Your dramatic knowledge may have grown from a love of film, TV, podcasts, radio or theatre. But you should know what makes a good script, where to find great writers, and how to work with them to help them produce their best work.

Similarly you should be able to recognise what makes a great actor and what the specific challenges are in radio.

We’d like to find somebody with an understanding of why audio is a unique medium for telling stories; somebody who believes the ‘pictures are better on the radio’; and somebody with a passion for ear-bending sound design.

Ideally, you will also have experience of preparing material for social media and have strong technical skills and imaginative flair in this field. As an integral member of the editorial team you’ll be both a strong team-player and a skilled self-scheduler.
