Reading, United Kingdom Reading Borough Council Full time

Job description

Are you looking for a rewarding role that can really make a difference? This is your opportunity to join a friendly and supportive team who work together to make a positive impact to the lives of older people in Reading. As a Sheltered Housing Activity Coordinator, you will develop and lead on the successful implementation of an events programme for older people based at the Council’s 10 sheltered housing schemes and 1 extra care housing scheme with a focus on digital inclusion.

Are you able to build strong working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders to support delivery of the programme? Do you have strong planning and organisational skills? Can you effectively engage with customers and provide a high level of customer service? If so, we want to hear from you This role will help to maintain the independence, improve wellbeing and reduce the social isolation of customers and older people living in the community.

We seek the best talent from the widest pool of people as diversity and inclusion is the key to our success. Reading Borough Council is a Disability Confident Employer and is committed to the recruitment and continued employment of people with disabilities.

We are open to flexible working patterns and can provide a hybrid working environment which utilises the best of both worlds with a mix of office working in central Reading and homeworking according to the needs of the Service.

**About the role**

You’ll take the lead and overall responsibility for developing a range of activities (both individual and group) across the sheltered housing and extra care schemes. These activities will be developed from needs identified in support plans as well as consultations with tenants and will build on the existing programme of events.

Main duties and responsibilities
- Ensure risk assessments are in place and regularly reviewed for all social events, whether scheme based or outings from the unit.
- Develop activities for those tenants who do not currently participate and who wish to socialise in their home rather than take part in communal activities
- Promote equality of access to activities e.g. providing support to people with a learning disability, hearing/visual impairment or from a different ethnic background.
- Promote digital inclusion amongst tenants through partnership working internally and externally
- Liaise closely with the Sheltered and Extra Care Housing Team who will help to deliver the activities in partnership with volunteers
- Recruit and develop a volunteer base to assist with providing activities. This will include ensuring that volunteers have relevant training and have DBS checks.
- Lead in accessing funding opportunities for activities and to advise the social committees on how to access funding to sustain activities where appropriate.
- Observe the general ability and response of tenants, recording and reporting information to colleagues as appropriate, including any concerns relating to safeguarding
- Ensure that the safety and welfare of people attending the activities is maintained accepting shared responsibility for health and safety.
- Obtain information from tenants and their relatives, colleagues and other professionals regarding their interests and skills, developing a rapport with them and encouraging their interests and skills.

You’ll be part of a team that relies on each individual to play their part to the best of their ability. As well as the colleagues that you work closely with every day, you’ll also be part of Team Reading, playing your personal part in making Reading a successful and vibrant place.

Our vision is to ensure that Reading realises its potential as a great place to live, work and play, and that everyone shares the benefits of this success. Our values and behaviours guide how we will achieve this:
**Work Together as one team** - work collaboratively, with each other and with our partners, and demonstrate the Team Reading values in everything we do

**Drive Efficiency** - show initiative, be adaptable to change and put forward ideas to help improve delivery and efficiency. Take responsibility for our own learning and development and for reaching our potential

**Be Ambitious** - be demanding of our own performance - striving to be even better - and be prepared to engage with and challenge leaders in a constructive and positive way

**Make a Difference to Reading** - maintain the highest levels of customer service and be flexible and willing to provide the services needed at the time they are needed

**About you**

You’ll be pro-active and be able to plan and organise activities that will stimulate interest and enhance older people’s quality of life, a keen attention to detail is important as you will be maintaining computer-based records and managing your own workload. You’ll hold a full driving license as travel between sites is essential in this role.
