**Job summary**:
The G7 Strategy and Policy Adviser role on offer sits in the Strategic Approach team within HMRC’s Intermediaries Directorate. An intermediary can be any person or entity, UK or offshore, that acts in some capacity between HMRC and its customers, in relation to any customer liability or entitlement to benefits.

Intermediaries are a vital part of the tax ecosystem and play an increasingly important role in tax administration supporting compliance, customer experience and efficiency. Millions of taxpayers already rely on intermediaries to perform key functions in the tax system and new ways of working and digital advances are likely to increase their importance. The value intermediaries bring to our ecosystem is recognised in HMRC’s Tax Administration Strategy (TAS) which sets out a growing role for intermediaries, driven by technology and taxpayer choice.

The Intermediaries Directorate will shape and drive the delivery of strategies and policies to support good intermediation. This will include the standards expected to ensure high levels of trust in intermediaries and the tax ecosystem. For some intermediaries it will include the design of the services HMRC provide, to ensure intermediaries can interact with HMRC: fulfilling their role and maximising customer experience. Intermediaries also have the potential to abuse their position in the tax system, both by engaging in tax evasion and avoidance and by unfairly exploiting our customers.

**Job description**:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Software Strategy and Policy Team. The team works across HMRC, wider government, and the professional representative body landscape; to develop HMRC’s strategic approach to realising the full value of software intermediaries within the tax ecosystem.

To give you a flavour of our work, some of the priorities on the team at present include:
Designing and delivering a tax software strategy

Implementing an internal and external software forum

Bridging gaps within HMRC to tackle tax software challenges ranging from compliance to Making Tax Digital in a joined-up way

Developing research papers on growing the trustworthiness of the tax software landscape

You will need to be confident and self-motivated in managing senior stakeholder relationships and willing to work flexibly and effectively under tight schedules. You'll be working against a backdrop of changing and challenging priorities to take care of complex and urgent issues as they arise. You will be working closely with a small team of G7s and an SO to deliver the software strategy. You will also be responsible for leading your own discrete projects/areas, for example, building HMRC’s understanding of, and opportunities to, support innovation within the tax software ecosystem.

There will also be opportunities to play cross-cutting roles in the development of the wider intermediaries directorate and helping to make it a great place to work.

**Person specification**:
The G7 Strategy & Policy Adviser’s responsibilities will include:

- Leading on the development of strategy/policy in high profile and complex areas within the tax software ecosystem
- Leading on future proofing HMRC software strategy and policy decisions by building a robust understanding of the drivers of change and innovation within the tax software space.
- Handling a diverse variety of internal and external customers within the tax software community and driving forward our ambition to collaborate with our stakeholders
- Producing high quality policy papers, analysis and advice to senior officials and Ministers
- Taking personal responsibility for maintaining quality and driving work through whilst delivering complex policy objectives

**Essential Criteria**

Ability to drive forward work autonomously while working collaboratively

**Desirable Criteria**
- Experience of working in a policy and/or strategy environment.
- A data/analytical background
- Knowledge of the tax system and/or tax compliance.
- Project management skills
- Experience of working in the third-party software space, innovation, transformation, or change

**Behaviours**:
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

- Seeing the Big Picture
- Making Effective Decisions
- Working Together
- Communicating and Influencing

**Benefits**:

- Learning and development tailored to your role
- An environment with flexible working options
- A culture encouraging inclusion and diversity
