**Job Title**:Academic Mentor (KS5 & KS4)**

**Job Purpose**: To monitor and support students in their supervised study sessions including responsibility for the environment and work ethic within the Sixth Form Study Area.

To help prepare pupils for their GCSE and A-level examinations.

The role will primarily involve supporting A-level students and may involve supporting GCSE pupils.

**Reporting Line**:Assistant Principal - Director of Sixth Form

Assistant Principal - Pupil Development and Well-being

**Start date**:September 2023

**Tenure**:Permanent, part-time, 36 weeks of the year (days and times to be discussed at interview)

The role may also involve some after-school hours

**Salary**:Competitive - based on the Surbiton High School Pay Scale

**Key Responsibilities for 6th Form**:

- To supervise the Sixth Form Study Area and organise resources and the environment of this area and maintain a productive working environment.
- To support students with their independent study and revision, including regular one-to-one meetings with students who require additional support.
- To register that students are present as required in supervised study sessions and follow-up absences when required.
- To develop suitable materials which will benefit students’ organisation and/or work ethic.
- To support students who need guidance in areas such as:

- Organisation and time-management
- Methods of study
- To liaise with Form Tutors and Assistant Directors of Sixth Form regarding:

- Students who do not attend supervised study sessions
- Students who are failing to make the best use of supervised study sessions
- Content of syllabuses and programmes of study to gain a greater understanding of these to help guide students
- Activities students should be undertaking
- Subject-specific issues students are experiencing with their studies
- To attend parental meetings to contribute to the discussion regarding additional support for a student, when required.

**Key Responsibilities for Year 11**
- To provide motivation, show purpose and give meaning to the pupils’ GCSE studies.
- To provide revision resources and support sessions for the entire year group, including addressing the pupils twice throughout the year in PSHE sessions to aid exam preparation.
- To develop suitable materials which will benefit pupils’ organisation and/or work ethic.
- To encourage, establish and support positive routines.
- To support pupils who need guidance in areas such as:

- Organisation and time management
- Methods of study
- To organise a mentoring schedule based around the timetabled private study periods of those pupils identified by the Head of Year 10/11, meeting each pupil fortnightly for 30 minutes.
- To liaise with Form Tutors and Heads of Year regarding:

- Pupils who do not attend mentoring sessions
- Pupils who are failing to make the best use of mentoring sessions
- Content of syllabuses and programmes of study
- Activities pupils should be undertaking
- Subject-specific issues pupils are experiencing with their studies
- Carrying out any such duties as may be reasonably requested.

**Person Specification**

**Qualifications**
- Good Honours degree, desirable
- GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/ 4 or above)

**Skills & Experience**
- A genuine interest in supporting students to meet their full academic potential
- The ability to empathise with students; to identify, understand and help them overcome the barriers that they may face during their GCSE and A-level studies.
- An understanding of the nature of GCSE and A-level study and the skills and habits required to succeed.
- The ability to create and maintain productive working relationships with students, their parents and staff.
- Excellent communication skills and command of the English language, both written and spoken, to enable effective communication with pupils, colleagues and parents
- Ability to inspire students
