Point of Care Testing

Working in partnership with our service partners, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals, King’s College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital we aim to set the standard for the future of pathology.
To ensure that all POCT activities in the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) & Harefield Hospital (HH) sites are performed safely, effectively and efficiently in accordance with all relevant Organisational policies and professional and regulatory standards.
To be responsible for provision of training and competency assessment for all staff who use POCT equipment, compliance monitoring, record keeping and reporting of all POCT devices within RB&HH.
To ensure that the governance of all POCT activities in the Trust is patient focussed and are performed effectively, efficiently and without compromising patient safety.
To be the organisational direct link with all POCT services, providing analytical and quality support as well as developing analytical POCT services in the RBHT.
To ensure that the service is developed in compliance with ISO 15189 for the POCT service and other applicable national professional guidelines. This includes organising and analysing audits and surveys to provide reassurance that appropriate clinical governance concerns in relation to POCT performed by RB&HH staff in all Directorates are met and to enable evidence-based service improvements where appropriate.
To be aware of scientific and technical POCT developments.
To ensure quality and governance matters are adhered to by certifying calibration and recording of quality control data, dealing with adverse incidents and keeping records allowing traceability and transparency through audit of actions taken by users when performing tests.
To be responsible for ensuring that written guidance on the appropriate use and interpretation of POCT tests and guidelines for inclusion in departmental and trust operating procedures is in line with clinical governance.
- To promote the continuous improvement in service delivery and quality within all areas of POCT, using modern methods to lead in the delivery of service, working closely with clinical staff throughout RB&HH.
To deploy necessary interpersonal skills to ensure effective liaison with service users and outside organisations to provide best care for patients.
- To attend POCT committee and other relevant meetings (e.g., Quality and governance).
- To effectively liaise with Risk Management Team, Clinical Governance and POCT Clinical Lead to ensure a standardised, consistent approach to POCT is maintained.
To work with a high degree of autonomy and be able to appropriately manage their time and work activities to provide optimal support to the POCT service across the organisation.

This is managed between you and your line manager in line with your own personal and professional development ambitions.
Communication
- To liaise successfully and effectively with individuals at all levels within RB&HH and other health care organisations
- To attend and participate in local management meetings, POCT Committees and sub-POCT meetings, decision making and policy implementation
- To provide summary reports of POCT activities for POCT Committees and periodic and annual management reviews of the POCT.
- To effectively present and provide guidance and training, as required.
- To attend Trust and external meetings relevant to POCT activities.
- Where appropriate, to attend meetings of Directorates using POCT equipment
- To ensure that there is a standard organisational protocol and format for the documentation of results from each type of device, and that there is clear guidance on action to be taken in the event of significantly abnormal results
- To investigate the relevance of Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) alert bulletins and communicate these as appropriate.
- To review Radar incident reports where POCT devices have been implicated.
- To present information to diverse groups of professionals relating to the implementation, management and performance of POCT equipment.
- To defer to experts within the Trust regarding aspects of POCT.
- To discuss technical POCT issues with manufacturers when dealing with faults or substandard performance. Some issues will be controversial requiring careful presentation of facts that may be in dispute
- To communicate with staff regarding equipment use, faults, hazards, training or technical issues.
