The Deputy Head of midwifery for Maternity will be responsible for providing operational management and leadership across Maternity Services in conjunction with the Head of Midwifery and include responsibility and accountability for an allocated cluster area within
the directorate.
Reporting to the Head of Midwifery, the post holder will be required to directly manage the designated area, ensuring operational safety, efficiency and effectiveness, budgetary control, the maximisation of income and effective clinical governance and risk management.
The post holder will also deputise for the Head of Midwifery in periods of absence.
Represent the Head of Midwifery at meetings internally and externally to the Trust when required/delegated.
Provide leadership support and appropriate challenge to clinical/operations leads in the delivery of projects identified.
The Deputy Head of Midwifery will be easily identifiable, visible and accessible to staff, patients and relatives. They will have excellent leadership skills that motivate, empower
and inspire others to promote an evidence based quality service.

Maintain strong working links with the Black Country LMNS, and other Black Country trusts.

Act as a positive role model through the provision of effective professional leadership/staff management and demonstration of competent / accountable clinical practice for designated area.
Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary practice, exploring new ideas and encouraging and ensuring the introduction of evidence-based change in practice.
Provide clinical advice and expertise to ensure that best practice is promoted and delivered to reduce risks to patients.
Incorporate relevant legislation and national and local guidance into clinical guidanceand practice.
Play a lead role in maintaining patient flow through the service, minimising bottlenecks within the service and ensuring teams have proactive approach towards this.
To be responsible for ensuring that patients follow agreed pathways of care and are supported towards safe, effective and timely discharge/transfer.
To act as a positive role model through the provision of effective professional leadership for relevant clinical areas and demonstration of competent and accountable clinical practice.

Deputy Head of Midwifery will have a portfolio to include operational oversight of Community Midwifery, Antenatal Screening, Fetal Medicine, Specialist Midwives. To work alongside the matrons for those areas, giving assurances to the Head of Midwifery for Quality and Safety for those areas.
