These two full-time posts are an exciting opportunity for an ambitious doctor to take on a fixed-term post in either Surgery or Orthopaedics, in a uniquely configured NHS Trust.

We want to recruit high calibre doctors who are looking to develop their skills and clinical experience on the Isle of Wight.

To participate in teaching seminars, clinical audits and departmental M&M meetings.

These posts involve working within the specialties outlined in the job description under the supervision of designated Educational Supervisor.

Post holders will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams and provide medical support to the specialty they are involved in.

To attend the wards and outpatients as required.

To participate in the relevant duty rota.

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust boasts a unique configuration, whereby it provides a comprehensive range of healthcare services. These include inpatient medicine and surgery, community, ambulance and mental health services. The Trust is moving towards Foundation Trust status.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES OF THE POST

These posts involve working within Surgery or Orthopaedics under the supervision of designated Educational Supervisor.

Post holders will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams and provide medical support to the specialty they are involved in.

Clinical Responsibilities

To attend the wards and outpatients as required.

To participate in the relevant duty rota as detailed in the section out-of-hours cover arrangements.

General

“In addition, practitioners will be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances without additional remuneration but may be granted time off in lieu at the discretion of the Trust. Commitments arising in such circumstances are, however, exceptional and practitioners should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.” Para 110d of TCS.

Governance, Education and Teaching
- To contribute to the teaching programme on site.
- To attend regular teaching seminars held by the Consultants and other medical staff.
- To participate fully in Clinical Audit.
- To attend departmental meetings

Professional
- In line with General Medical Council (GMC) and Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.

The Trust has negotiated the prevention and control of healthcare associated infection [HCAI] as a core patient safety issue. As part of the duty of care to patients, all staff are expected to:

- Understand duty to adhere to policies and procedures applicable to infection prevention and control.
- Comply with key clinical care policies and protocols for prevention and control of infection at all times; this includes compliance with Trust policies for hand hygiene, standards (universal) infection precautions and safe handling and disposal of sharps.
- All staff should be aware of the Trust’s Infection Control policies and other key clinical policies relevant to their work and how to access them.
- All staff will be expected to attend prevention and infection control training, teaching and updates (induction and mandatory teaching) as appropriate for their area of work, and be able to provide evidence of this at appraisal.

Ensure that you comply with the Mental Capacity Act and its code of Practice when working with adults who may be unable to make decisions for themselves.

You must adhere to and work within the local Multiagency safeguarding vulnerable adult’s policies and procedures.

Your weekly timetable will be agreed with the supervising consultant.

General Surgery

Because referral to the mainland is disruptive and expensive a full range of emergency and planned elective adult General Surgery, Breast, Urology & Colorectal Surgery is undertaken on the Island.

The General Surgery Department at Isle of Wight NHS consists of the following:
Consultants - x7

Associate Specialists/Specialty Doctors - x4

Specialty Training Registrar - ST3 x 3

Core Surgical Trainee - CT2 x 2

Foundation year 2 x 3

Foundation year 1 x4

Trauma and Orthopaedics

Because referral to the mainland is disruptive and expensive a full range of adult orthopaedic surgery is undertaken on the Island. Where necessary, patients are referred to specialised units such as Southampton.

The Orthopaedic Outpatient Centre is adjacent to the Accident and Emergency and Diagnostic Imaging departments and includes a fully equipped
