More about EMBL-EBI

We are looking for an experienced and exceptional HR professional, with solid experience in developing and implementing career development programmes to take on this leadership role in our internationally renowned scientific institute. This role is part of a developing HR leadership team made up of the Head of Human Resources, two deputies and the heads of the HR functions within EMBL.

At European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)'s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), we make the world’s public biological data freely available to the scientific community via a range of services and tools, perform fundamental research and provide professional training in bioinformatics. Specifically we help scientists realise the potential of 'big data' in biology, exploiting complex information to make discoveries, and supporting EMBL-EBI to fulfil its scientific mission. Key to this mission are our people - the HR team aims to attract engage, support and develop highly talented scientists, skilled technical and administrative experts and specialists from around the world. Currently with around 800 staff EMBL-EBI is a truly international organisation, with the majority of our people originating from outside the UK.

Your role

As Deputy Head of HR for the EBI you will nurture, support and celebrate this diversity, which is at the core of the Institute’s success. Drawing on your experience of strategic HR and career development you will support the development and implementation of HR strategy and policy decisions and lead on the delivery of HR operational excellence in a busy and demanding environment. In your role you will be responsible for providing a comprehensive and high quality HR service. You will also be a key driver in developing and implementing EMBL’s career development programme.

As an intergovernmental organisation, EMBL is outside the remit of many national frameworks including employment, taxation and immigration legislation - you will need to gain a full and deep understanding of this context to be successful in the role. The HR team is part of a wider EMBL-EBI administration and the EMBL central HR team based in Heidelberg. This role reports jointly to the EMBL Head of Human Resources and the EMBL-EBI Head of Administration and Operations. A limited amount of travel within Europe is required to build and maintain relationships across EMBL.

**Responsibilities include**:
Constantly seek to improve understanding of the aims and needs of the organisation and its people, and work closely with HR colleagues in EMBL Headquarters and EMBL-EBI leadership to develop and deliver HR strategy and policies and staff engagement.
Develop and implement EMBL’s career development offer.
Initiate/contribute to process improvement and other change projects.
Provide advice and guidance to staff at all levels on performance management, recruitment, contracting and development.
As part of the EMBL-EBI Administration work closely with colleagues in other support functions to provide integrated processes supporting the work of the Institute.
