**Primary School Caretaker - ASAP, notice periods considered - Chichester, West Sussex, UK**
**Post**:25 hrs p/w, term time only, plus optional overtime during the school holidays
**Responsible to**:Headteacher and School Bursar
**Salary**:WSCC Grade 4, point 5 - £19,650 (£11,337 pro rata)
- A new caretaker looking to get hands-on experience maintaining a school building for a future, more permanent role
**The applicant will need**:
- the ability to use their initiative
- to be thorough and pay attention to detail

- sensitivity and understanding, with good communication skills to staff and companies
- knowledge of public safety and security
- a desire to help people
- basic computer skills/handheld device skills
- A DBS on the update service, or happy to obtain one for the role
Key duties:
- Organise and carry out various maintenance duties to ensure that the general upkeep and maintenance of the premises is satisfactory.
- Organise and carry out minor decoration and improvement work e.g. erecting shelves, notice boards, bookshelves, etc as agreed with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
- Ensure urgent minor repairs to the buildings are carried out, either directly or by external contractors.
- Liaise with contractors working on site and check that work is completed to required standards and within required timescales.
- To be responsible for the school preventative planned maintenance programme, carrying out routine inspections of the buildings, fixtures, fittings, furniture, premises and grounds. Assess for minor work or repairs required to maintain safe and satisfactory conditions, sourcing quotes where necessary.
- Operate and regularly check systems such as heating, cooling, lighting and security (including CCTV and alarms).
- Report meter readings for utilities.
- Assist in the organisation, arrangements and monitoring of various related contracts including cleaning.
- Carry out fire alarm tests and to maintain the appropriate records.
Security:
- Act as a designated key holder on a rota with the SLT, providing out of hours and emergency access to the school site.
- Maintain the school key register system.
- Ensure adequate security of buildings and premises at all times, complying with school policies to manage access to the premises.
- Report any breaches of security and recommend to the Headteacher any suitable and appropriate improvements to the security of the building.
- Assist the SLT in organising fire drills and procedures.
School Activity Programme:
- Support the school team in the co-ordination of all uses of the school site.
- Assist in the preparation of the premises for school events, reception of visitors, car parking etc
- Liaise with the school meals service contractors in relation to their use of the site and provision of their service.
