This is a Band 8a Principal Genetic Counsellor post providing an exciting opportunity to join the friendly, dynamic and supportive team of Genetic Counsellors at the South West Thames Centre for Genomics.
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing a specialist area of the genetic counselling team, with a focus on rare disease and prenatal work, but may be required to provide cross cover for cancer services. This will be dependent upon service needs and will take into account the experience and interests of the candidate.
The genetic counselling team provide clinical consultation, counselling and referral support for patients, midwives, consultants and other health professionals in the region. The post holder may have a mixed caseload and responsibility for triage/case review/line management for the team including cancer, rare disease, prenatal and possibly other specialist genetics clinics. We also have a growing cardiac genetics service. The successful candidate will also support our training programme for STP trainees and MSc students.
In addition to clinical work, this post holds many opportunities for teaching, research and development. Our Consultant Geneticist team are leading clinical academic work and the genetic counselling team make a huge contribution to teaching opportunities at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. This is in addition to outreach teaching and support work with the network of health care professionals in our region. We encourage on-going personal and professional development in addition to supporting involvement in research, with our team often presenting at national and international conferences.
Applicants should ideally have experience as a Band 8a Principal Genetic Counsellor and must be registered with the Genetic Counsellor Registration Board (GCRAB) or equivalent and ideally will have valid Sign-off Mentor/Assessor training. We are looking for a genetic counsellor who is confident working autonomously within the busy, often time pressured, genetic counselling setting. The post holder will be able to recognise the needs of a service and to adopt a flexible and collaborative approach and provide support to colleagues when needed.
We provide an integrated clinical genetics service for individuals or families who have, or are at risk of having a genetic disorder. We deliver this service at St George's Hospital, a leading London teaching hospital and one of the largest healthcare units in the UK, as well as in a number of local district hospitals across the region including in Surrey and West Sussex.
St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provide services from two main hospitals, St George's Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital, and two health centres, St Johns Therapy Centre, and The Nelson Centre. With over 9,000 dedicated staff caring for patients around the clock, we are the largest healthcare provider in southwest London.
GCRAB/HCPC/equivalent Registered Genetic Counsellor
Robust understanding of all aspects of clinical governance including previous experience of quality issues, audit and risk management
Additional experience in specialist area of genetic counselling
Mphil/PhD/equivalent
Post-graduate teaching qualification
Clinical experience as a Band 7 (or above) genetic counsellor with experience in at least one specialist area of genetic counselling
Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education at undergraduate and postgraduate level
Evidence of continued professional development-reviewing current practice and research developments within specialist area and application to clinical practice
Significant experience at Band 8 in specialist area of genetic counselling
Previous experience of line management of genetic counsellors
Experience of independent and collaborative research
Previous telephone counselling experience
Ability to identify and lead on service developments within the genetic counselling service
In-depth knowledge of genetic counselling
