In support of the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen)'s business strategy, the organisation is looking to develop its public affairs activity. This role is a new position for NatCen and provides an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of building and delivering its programme of engagement.

Key Responsibilities

We are looking for someone with enthusiasm and a passion for communicating the public's voice to policymakers and who understands the importance and value of robust research evidence. The role reports into NatCen's Head of Marketing and Communications and, as Public Affairs Manager, you will develop and deliver NatCen's programme of public affairs engagement. This will include:

  • Building and strengthening NatCen's relationships with government and other relevant stakeholders to increase the visibility of our research and raise our profile amongst parliamentarians and other policy stakeholders and influencers;
  • Carrying out regular stakeholder mapping and horizon scanning of the policy landscape, working closely with NatCen's research leads to identify and communicate our expertise in specific topic areas;
  • Working closely with NatCen's research leads to ensure the analysis and insights from our published research are presented and share with all relevant parliamentary and other policy stakeholders in a compelling and engaging manner;
  • Leading on NatCen's political and policy engagement including, but not limited to, writing policy briefs, responding to consultations and inquiries, organising related events, and creating and delivering impactful communications;
  • Championing and supporting colleagues from across the organisation in presenting NatCen's research evidence to policy stakeholders and the media;
  • Working as part of the Marketing and Communications team and be responsible for running NatCen's public affairs function, including overseeing the Events and Engagement Officer.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Experience of the UK policy landscape and knowledgeable about how to effectively engage with stakeholders of all levels
  • Strategic thinker with a focus on impact
  • Comfortable with working independently and under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills, with the ability to communicate with people at all levels face-to-face and digitally
  • Experience of creating high-quality written content in a variety of mediums
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Professional and hard-working team player

  • Maintain high ethical standards
  • Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of all responsibilities in relation to maintaining confidentiality with both written and oral communication
  • Follow the requirements of our Operating Standards, and also to meet the requirements of all our ISO standards
