A fantastic and rare opportunity to work at the heart of UK Policy making focusing on dismantling poverty in the UK.

The Big Issue Group is looking for an accomplished campaigner with an understanding of political advocacy, the House of Lords and House of Commons to become our new Head of Public Affairs on a 1 year contract.

You will be working in Lord Bird’s office in Westminster leading the development of the Big Issue Group Public Affairs strategy and plans, working across Lord Bird’s office and our programmes of work including running the APPG on ‘Business Responses to Social Crisis’, and advancing Lord Bird’s private member’s bill such as, the Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill, through the House of Lords.

You will develop research proposals, fund raise for Lord Birds parliamentary office and manage his small staff team whilst working in conjunction with Big Issue’s campaigning arm - Big Futures and play an exciting role in developing political influencing strategies, all designed to dismantle poverty for the 15 million people in the UK affected by poverty.

**Main Duties**:

- Lead the parliamentary work on all bills, as well as any associated APPGs and steering groups;
- Advance the Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill, through the UK Parliament and within the UK Government
- Develop and run the APPG ‘Business solutions to social crisis’, in partnership with a series of business partners and social enterprises
- Lead on fundraising to financially sustain the public affairs department long term
- Support the work of the Big Futures campaign and team, to ensure the policies campaigned for, are aligned with the work of Lord Bird and the parliamentary influencing strategy
- Build interest and support amongst the public, and via partnerships with youth, academic, civil society and business groups for our political comms campaigns
- Set and deliver our political influencing strategy, whilst having the ability to capitalise on tactical opportunities as they arise
- Coordinate the overlapping arms of our campaigns and policies (parliamentary, government and partnerships) to maximum benefit; and ensure these are respected cross-party and cross-sector;
- Develop research proposals to support the public affairs work, bills and campaigns.
- Manage and develop a small team;
- Work independently, but as an employee of the Big Issue Group;
- Lead the public affairs department
- Liaise closely with Lord Bird and the Big Issue senior management team;
- Work from the office of Lord Bird and alongside MPs, Peers and APPGs in Millbank and alongside Big Issue team members at Finsbury Park
- Be able to work with a series of senior stakeholders and influence at a senior level, and manage a diverse range of personalities and opinions

**Desired Skills and experience**:

- You have a deep understanding of political advocacy, the House of Lords and House of Commons parliamentary processes and the ability to work across party boundaries. You would ideally have past experience of having worked closely for a Lord or MP.
- You have an excellent understanding of how to plan and influence decision-makers in government, parliament and the ability to seize tactical opportunities that align with our programmes of work;
- You will be an established fundraiser and experienced in developing fundraising proposals to deliver fundraising income
- You are already an accomplished campaigner, with experience of overseeing a successful campaign, including office administration;
- Have an understanding of the challenges of long-term thinking in government policymaking
- Highly skilled at building and managing relationships of all types, including partnerships.
- You have excellent spoken and written communication skills;
- You are a self-starter with staying power who is excited to lead the Big Issue’s Public Affairs department;
- You are highly organised and prepared to manage the range of tasks involved in growing campaigns;
- You can deliver to deadlines, but can adapt your schedule to meet changing demands and priorities;

Salary and Benefits:

- The salary offered will be between £50,000 - £55,000
- Incremental holiday entitlement starting at 25 days per year plus bank holidays (pro-rata for part time staff) plus paid leave to care for a sick child or grandchild and a sick or elderly relation
