W&A is excited to be partnering with Capella to assist in sourcing a Finance Director.

This role is part-time with 2.5 working days per week and based in the Gilmerton area of Edinburgh.

The Business

Capella has been delivering lasting change through learning since 1998. The charity is known for quality and innovation and has grown considerably since 2021. Capella was Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Employer of the Year in 2023, is a Living Wage employer and has won numerous other awards. Capella plans to continue to grow and maintain its quality through ongoing investment and innovation. Capella runs two charitable services:

Sleep Action is the leading source for sleep knowledge and advice in the UK. Through it’s free Sleep Support Line the charity supports around 800 families per year to help children and young people have health sleep which improves health, wellbeing and educational attainment. The charity also trains hundreds of people each year such as nurses, teachers and social care workers. The charity has trained over 1300 Sleep Counsellors who work across the UK and Ireland to support healthy sleep.

Teens+ is a pathway for school leavers with additional needs to fulfil their potential. The service represents about 80% of the charity turnover and supports around 100 young adults in the Lothians with transformational educational support. The service has an excellent track record in achieving lasting impact on the lives of its students and their families. Teens+ is unique by offering accredited learning to students and is the only registered social care provider licensed to offer Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The charity plans to increase it’s centres from 4 to at least 6 in the next 5 years.

Purpose of the role

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Finance Director will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial management of the charity, financial compliance and the development and oversight of their financial strategy. The Finance Director will provide commercial focus, lead on financial compliance and governance and oversee strong and effective financial administration and reporting.

Strategy, planning and leadership

Work closely with the CEO and Senior Management Team to deliver strategic and operational plans to ensure they continue to provide direction and reflect the changing needs of the charity.

Contribute to the development and evaluation of business and investment strategies.

Provide leadership and deputise for the CEO as necessary; promote at all times the culture and values of the charity.

Advise the Board of Trustees and CEO on all financial matters.

Produce and interpret timely and accurate financial information for SMT and Board members attending SMT and Board meetings, as required.

With the CEO, lead the annual budget and business planning cycle, ensuring budgets are properly scrutinised and challenged prior to submission for Board approval.

Lead by example by acting as a role model for their values.

Finance, risk and compliance

Ensure adequate and timely financial and risk reporting to the CEO, Board and sub-groups to support robust decision making.

Prepare the annual accounts, Board KPIs, annual budget, quarterly reforecasts and monthly management accounts.

Produce the annual Office of the Scottish Regulator (OSCR) return in order to comply with Charity legislation/requirements.

Liaise with HMRC and external auditors regarding audits/visits to ensure compliance and answer any queries.

Responsible for all company payments, e.g. payroll, grants, etc.

Monitor management information and compare outcome against budgets, predicting future trends.

Develop and enhance the financial and management reporting systems to meet the strategic and operational needs of the Charity.

Ensure costs are managed effectively, conducting regular reviews to evaluate cost-reduction opportunities.

Ensure the charity complies with financial regulations and financial policies.

Keep up-to-date with financial regulations, legislation and best practice.

Develop external relationships with appropriate contacts such as, external auditors, bankers, external payroll provider, statutory organisations, etc.

Ownership of risk management, encompassing both the risk register and ongoing review of the financial controls.

Identify future challenges and opportunities and ensure the charity adapts and prepares for changes in a timely and effective way. Lead on the development and management of the charity risk register.

Supervision of staff

Leadership of the finance team.

Line manage direct reports providing strategic direction, support and coaching, clear objectives and constructive feedback on performance.

Conduct staff supervision duties including, but not limited to, recruitment, appraisal, dispute resolution, attendance monitoring, risk assessments etc. as described in the charity’s policies and procedures.

Communication

Be open, accountable and approachable to encourage a learning culture within the organisation.

Work with the CEO and SMT to fully understand their needs and issues to avoid any potential disruption to strategic and operational plans.

Develop relationships and networks to promote the work of Capella. Build partnerships with other organisations that furthers the development of the organisation.

Key Skills, Attributes and Experience Required

Fully qualified accountant (CIMA/ACCA/ACA/CIPFA).

Proven track record of robust financial management within the private, public or charity sector.

Highly organised, systematic, pragmatic and flexible.

Excellent track record in financial reporting and forecasting.

Strong analytical skills to allow informed decision making.
