An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Liaison Psychiatry Nurse to join our Liaison Psychiatry Service.

We are looking for Nurses who have a high level of skill in the assessment of people who present to ED in crisis, and in the assessment of those who have mental health needs during their inpatient stay in the acute hospital. The Liaison teams work across the full age spectrum, including older adults and some out of hours CAMHS work. We therefore welcome applicants with existing crisis and liaison experience but also those who have experience working with older adults, HTTs, CMHTs or mental health inpatients. This is a challenging but rewarding role, within a busy and evolving multidisciplinary service.

Main duties of the job

The team provides a 24hr service across seven days of the week, assessing patients that present with mental health problems, including psychiatric crisis. As a Liaison Psychiatry Nurse, you will be expected to assess patients who are referred from the ED and inpatient areas who present with a wide range of psychiatric disorders and often with physical health co-morbidities including delirium.

As well as promoting your own professional development, there will be opportunities for you to participate in the teaching and training of nurses and other health professionals.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide a specialist consultation liaison service to referring clinicians and clinical teams, assisting them in decision making in difficult and complex cases in order to help reduce the number of patients awaiting mental health assessment and to provide short term input including assessing and treating inpatients working intensively to support early discharge.

The post holder will promote choice and hopefulness and ensure a recovery orientated approach.

The post holder will promote and initiate any actions to safeguard vulnerable adults.

The post holder will be responsible for the full assessment of care needs of patients presenting with a wide variety of clinical conditions without direct supervision. Following this, the post-holder will be responsible for planning and referring on to a multitude of inpatient and community settings for appropriate follow up where necessary.

The post holder will provide a comprehensive consultation liaison service to the ED department and individual inpatient areas/clinicians, particularly in assisting them develop emergency/longer term plans of care and make difficult decisions in cases where patients are exhibiting complex psychosocial needs and/or challenging behaviours.

The post holder will be required to provide support and an assessor role for pre-registration students during their placement period with the service.

The post holder will act as a role model in providing a service for people with mental health problems for all staff within the ED/main hospital: helping with developing strong relationships between the hospital and Liaison.

The post holder will initiate and participate in audit/research projects associated with the work of the service when required.

The post holder represents Mental Health Trust in the general hospital setting and will play a vital role in communicating and maintaining a good working relationship between the Trusts.

  • oRegistered Adult Nurse and/or Registered Mental Health Nurse and/or Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse
  • oMentorship qualification

  • Experience of research-based/reflective practice, e.g. understanding and ability to use supervision to reflect on skills, attitude and knowledge and develop these by using evidence based practice
  • Significant relevant clinical experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Experience as a preceptor / mentor
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and audit
  • Knowledge of relevant Professional and Clinical legislation
  • Understanding of Care Co-ordination under CPA
