Specialist Dietitian

We are looking to recruit a self-motivated and committed Dietitian to join our friendly and proactive department.

This exciting opportunity entails working closely to provide seamless care across acute and communitywith oncology patients. The post holder will be supported to make any necessary changes that benefit service delivery. The post holder will be involved in supporting a variety of oncology patients, predominantly Head & Neck (H& N), but will include other tumour specific sites (lung, upper GI, hepatobiliary and pancreatic, bowel, gynaecology) at various points in their treatment and will have the opportunity to network with dietetic peers in the region as well as attend MDT meetings. The role will include supporting patients who are referred via our chemotherapy day units.

There will be an element of cross-site working between our two main hospital sites, and additionally will support St Benedict's Hospice.

You will be line managed by our senior specialist dietitian in H& N, and will have peer support from another oncology specialist dietitian within the department.

Experience of working in a busy environment would be an advantage as well as experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team whilst maintaining a patient focus.

This post is subject to satisfactory DBS check at Enhanced level

We are actively involved in the training of Trainee Dietitians and offer A, B and C placements.

Nutrition & Dietetics sit under the Therapies Directorate within Clinical Support.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The main duties of the job include:

To provide an expert nutritional support and dietary education service for oncology patients attending South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust to promote nutritional health and increased quality of life.

To act as a specialised resource on nutrition and cancer for patients, carers, medical staff, nursing staff, and other health care professionals associated with South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and at regional level.

To monitor and review the aims of nutritional care plans and recommend change or intervention to facilitate achievement of appropriate aims.

To work collaboratively with the MDT to ensure appropriate dietetic intervention.

To be responsible for the development of departmental protocols for the dietetic treatment of oncology patients

To be responsible for the provision and development of a specialist evidence - based nutrition and dietetic service for patients with an oncology cancer diagnosis, many of whom will have complex needs across both hospital sites.

To be responsible for the development and delivery of the dietetic service to the Chemotherapy Day Unit.

To share departmental lead in developing services for Oncology patients.

To attend ward rounds and multi-disciplinary/joint clinics on a regular basis providing expert nutritional advice.

To provide expert nutritional advice to clinicians, patients and carers regarding the provision of nutritional support for oncology patients. This will involve nutritional assessment including the calculation of nutritional requirements based on the interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometry, clinical condition, and other parameters.

To provide specialist advice to patients, carers, other health professionals and clinicians both within and external to the Trust.

To monitor and review the aims and targets of nutritional care plans and recommend change or intervention to the care plan to facilitate the achievement of the best possible clinical outcomes.

To be responsible of the discharge planning and ongoing management for oncology patients under your care being discharged home on enteral feeding.
