Devon, United Kingdom Met Office Full time €46,974

We're looking for an exceptional Scientist - Coastal Ocean Modeller to help us make a difference to our planet. As our Scientist, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 30 hours per week and we will also try our best to consider those intending to work a job share. From science to technology, from meteorology to management, and from planning to communication, our expertise helps us stand out as the authority on weather accuracy and climate prediction. We help individuals, industries and government to make better decisions to stay safe and thrive. This is the Met Office. We're a force for good - focusing on our environmental and social impact
The Met Office is the UK's National Meteorological Service and one of the world's foremost weather, climate service and operational oceanography providers. The Met Office is at the forefront of meteorological science and, through the Met Office Hadley Centre, is a recognised world leading organisation in climate science and services. The Ocean Modelling team sits within the Ocean Cryosphere and Dangerous Climate Change (OCDC) strategic area of the Met Office Hadley Centre. OCDC has a wide-ranging role in developing and evaluating the Met Office's marine modelling tools that are used in ocean forecasting on timescales from days to centuries (including coupled ocean-atmosphere weather and climate prediction), and in applying them to understand and quantify the role of the ocean in climate variability and change.
Within OCDC, the Ocean Modelling team focusses on development and evaluation of multiple ocean model configurations for the globe and for the Northwest European shelf seas, that are the basis of the Met Office's coupled weather and climate prediction systems. This work is done jointly with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) through the Joint Marine Modelling Programme. The group also contributes to the development of the underlying NEMO community ocean modelling code.
As our Scientist - Ocean Modelling, you will perform scientific research to further our understanding of shelf seas and contribute to the evaluation and development of the Northwest European shelf seas model configurations used in Met Office modelling systems. You will manage the configurations used in our Shelf Seas systems and work closely with others in the Ocean Modelling team and NOC, as well as stakeholders across several teams in the office.
Managing the Shelf Seas configurations, keeping these up to date with the latest NEMO version and aligned with stakeholder requirements.
Performing scientific and technical developments as well as evaluation of the Northwest European shelf seas configurations used within all Met Office systems.
Pro-actively engaging with other teams at the Met Office (Regional Environmental Prediction, Marine Data Assimilation, Shelf Seas Forecasting) and at NOC.
Communication activities relating to the Met Office's Shelf Seas configurations, including peer-reviewed scientific papers and attendance at workshops and conferences, to enhance the scientific reputation of the Met Office and the Ocean Modelling team.
The Met Office is accredited as a 'Great Place to Work UK 2023' and in addition has achieved a place on both the UK's 'Best Workplaces in Tech' and 'Best Workplaces for Women' lists.
