The Marine Biological Association is on the lookout for committed and passionate professionals with substantial experience in various fields such as research, governance, business development, community engagement, or operational roles. We invite individuals who are eager to influence the future of our oceans to join our Board of Trustees.

About the Organization:

The MBA is a prestigious Learned Society comprising scientists and members from over forty nations across five continents. Our extensive scientific investigations into the interconnected marine ecosystem are conducted from our esteemed laboratory headquarters. The MBA has a Royal Patron and holds a Royal Charter, affirming its global leadership in marine biology. As we celebrate our long-standing history, the MBA stands as one of the oldest research institutions advocating for the ocean and the global marine biological community. Our legacy includes contributions to the work of numerous Nobel Laureates and Fellows of The Royal Society, and we aim to be a prime career destination for emerging marine biologists.

Role and Responsibilities:

As a Trustee, your responsibilities will include:

• Providing strategic guidance and oversight for the organization
• Ensuring effective management and financial sustainability
• Supporting efforts for stakeholder engagement
• Advocating for marine biology and the objectives outlined in our Royal Charter
• Participating in quarterly Trustee meetings and engaging in working Committees as necessary

Candidate Profile:

• A strong passion for marine biology and ocean sustainability, aligned with our mission and values
• Experience in one or more areas including marine biology research leadership, scientific publishing, stakeholder engagement, international relations, communications, learned society leadership, policy, charity governance, senior finance and operational roles, legal compliance, business development, marketing, risk management, philanthropy, fundraising, IT infrastructure, or cybersecurity
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
• Capacity to dedicate time and expertise to the role
• Commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion

While Trustees are not compensated, all reasonable expenses incurred during official business will be reimbursed. The term for a Trustee is typically three years, with the potential for reappointment for up to two additional terms, not exceeding a total of nine years. Each Trustee will serve on one of three working Committees: Research; Finance, Audit and Risk; or Membership and Engagement, depending on their expertise.
