The Marine Biological Association is on the lookout for committed and passionate professionals with extensive experience in various fields such as research, governance, business development, community engagement, or operational roles, who are eager to influence the future of our oceans by joining our Board of Trustees.

About the Organization:

The MBA is a prestigious Learned Society comprising scientists and members from over forty nations across five continents. Our extensive scientific investigations into the interconnected marine ecosystem are conducted from our esteemed laboratory headquarters. With a Royal Patron and a Royal Charter, we are recognized for our global leadership in marine biology. As we celebrate our long-standing history, the MBA remains one of the oldest research institutions advocating for the ocean and the global marine biological community. Our legacy includes contributions to the work of 13 Nobel Laureates and over 170 Fellows of The Royal Society, positioning us as a prime destination for aspiring marine biologists.

We are inviting applications for up to 3 new Trustees to join the MBA Council. We particularly encourage individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, early-career ocean professionals, and international candidates, with provisions for remote participation and reimbursement of travel expenses to facilitate involvement.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Trustee, your role will involve:

• Providing strategic oversight and direction for the organization
• Ensuring effective management and financial sustainability
• Supporting engagement with stakeholders
• Advocating for marine biology and the objectives outlined in our Royal Charter
• Participating in quarterly Trustee meetings and contributing to working Committees as necessary

Desired Qualifications:

• A strong passion for marine biology and commitment to ocean sustainability
• Experience in one or more of the following areas: marine biology research leadership, scientific publishing, stakeholder engagement, international relations, communications, learned society leadership, policy development, charity governance, senior finance and operational roles, legal compliance, business development, marketing, risk management, philanthropy, fundraising, IT infrastructure, or cybersecurity
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
• Capacity to dedicate time and expertise to the role
• Strong commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion

While Trustees are not compensated, all reasonable expenses incurred while performing duties for the MBA will be reimbursed. The term for a Trustee is three years, with the possibility of extending for two additional terms, not exceeding a total of nine years. Each Trustee will serve on one of three working Committees: Research; Finance, Audit and Risk; or Membership and Engagement, with appointments based on expertise.
