Main duties of the job

In this vital role, you will:
Be part of a close working specialist MDT assessing patients for AAC. You will advise on solutions for both mounting and accessibility options identifying the best fit commercially available equipment. Where this is not available, work to modify or manufacture solutions in line with national guidelines.
Become highly knowledgeable about AAC and the array of settings that can be applied to support the patients on your caseload to have the best possible access to their device. You will develop strong working relation with AAC suppliers and to have an in depth understanding of the products provided.
Need to consider the patient's holistic Assistive Technology needs and how their AAC technology can be integrated with other specialist equipment eg wheelchair access, Environmental Controls (EC) and/or computer access
Be responsible for the design and development of innovative custom items for patients
Independently run mounting clinics throughout the region to support patients who have ongoing needs

Job responsibilities
To contribute to MDT clinical assessments to identify the most appropriate AAC and Assistive Technology (AT) solutions for patients referred to the service.
To contribute to the MDTs recommendation of best fit commercially available equipment. Where this is not available, work to modify or manufacture solutions in line with national guidelines.
To maintain and develop knowledge of equipment available for patients.
To develop a strong working relation with AAC suppliers and to have a strong understanding of the products provided.
To work with the MDT to identify suitable set ups for integrated access solutions that allow patients to streamline their access for AAC, wheelchair access, Environmental Controls (EC) and/or computer access and to take responsibility to plan the management, support and implementation of these solutions.
To be responsible for the design and development of custom items for a patient such as mounting systems etc.
Maintain an awareness of current standards and developments in AAC and Assistive technology equipment and computing to advise users and clinical staff.
To take the lead in coordinating and delivering mounting clinics in the region.
To complete relevant documentation for all aspects of clinical work.
To support and adhere to quality management system.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Engineering degree along side a minimum of 2 years experience of working at a senior level in a clinical environment
  • Registration on the Register of Clinical Technologists
  • Proven CPD in Assistive technology and /or AAC


Experience
Essential

  • Significant practical experience in engineering within a healthcare, social care, or education setting
  • Experience of modifying/manufacturing equipment for an individual's tailored needs and completing relevant documentation


Desirable

  • Experience in a relevant assistive technology service which could include Augmentative & Alternative Communication, Environmental Control, Wheelchair Service, Special Seating, or relevant manufacturer.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Essential

  • Ability to communicate technical equipment-related information to other technical and non-technical personnel at all levels within the Trust, to patients with complex medical needs, other stakeholders etc
  • Experience of working with and understanding quality management systems
  • To be responsible for the design and development of custom items for a patient such as mounting systems etc.
  • To successfully work as part of an MDT
  • Ability to communicate and interact with patients who present with sever communication, physical, sensory, behavioral and or cognitive difficulties


Desirable

  • The ability to set up and manage integrated access for various assistive tech functions

  • A Full Driving licence is essential for this role
  • Interest in technology
  • Ability to manage the emotional pressures of working with clients with complex disabilities and terminal illnesses
