Clinical Psychologist in Neurological Rehabilitation

Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A driving licence and a car available to use for work are essential as you will be required to travel across sites and in the community.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to shape and develop the psychology service within the teams and work alongside the Band 7 clinical leads to improve the service we offer to patients.

  • Your role will include:
    • Carrying a clinical caseload and ensuring the provision of a high quality specialist neuropsychology service to adults living with a neurological condition and to their carers
    • Supporting the psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions provided by other clinical members of the service who provide psychologically-based care and treatments
    • Offering specialist advice and consultation to patients' psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to non-professional carers
    • Providing consultation, training, and support to the MDT and to other professionals working with people with neurological conditions, and to mainstream mental health teams
    • Supervision of the Band 5 Assistant Psychologist and working together to develop the service

Job responsibilities

Job Summary

  • To work as a core member of the multidisciplinary neurological rehabilitation teams
  • To carry a clinical caseload and to ensure the systematic provision of a high quality specialist neuropsychology service to adults living with a neurological condition and to their carers
  • To support the psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions provided by other clinical members of the service who provide psychologically-based care and treatments
  • To offer specialist advice and consultation to patients psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to non-professional carers
  • To provide consultation, training, and support to the MDT and to other professionals working with people with neurological conditions, and to mainstream mental health teams.
  • To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice
  • To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research
  • To propose and implement policy changes within the Community Neuro Rehab Team
  • The post holder is expected to drive between visits using their own car and will be required to travel to other office/ hospital based locations across the Trust for meetings, training and supervision.

Main Duties

  • Assesses and treats own specialist caseload of clients and maintains associated records
  • Provides, develops, and manages highly specialist interventions
  • Clinically supervises assistant practitioners, graduate psychologists and doctoral trainees
  • Contributes to the supervision of less experienced qualified psychologists
  • Works in the community, in hospital, and in outpatient facilities with individuals, families, and other teams and services involved
  • Co-ordinates provision of a specialist service and provides specialist advice and consultation to other professions and carers.
Person Specification Qualifications and Professional Registration
  • oA Post graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan development psychology
  • oHCPC Registration as a Clinical Psychologist
  • oEvidence of continuing professional development
  • oClinical supervision training
  • oSpecialist training relevant to neuropsychology
Experience
  • oWorked as a qualified clinical psychologist for a minimum of three years.
  • oAssessed experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist at a specialist level within neuropsychology.
  • oExperience of working with and assessing a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient, residential care settings, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • oWell established knowledge and skills in using a broad range of advanced assessments and tests relevant to neurological clients.
  • oExperience of providing clinical supervision to trainee clinical psychologists, assistant psychologists and other members of the MDT.
Skills and Knowledge
  • oSkills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • oWell-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • oKnowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies and assessment methodologies relevant to psychology and neuropsychology.
  • oCommitment to and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary team working.
  • oAbility to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.

  • oUK driving licence and car driver with access to a car for work purposes
  • oWillingness to work across locations and hours of work when required.
