About the job

Allocation of rolling stock to train plan giving due consideration to unit mileages with regard to scheduled Maintenance requirements, unit defects, and other operational requirements. Work with the Production Manager to establish available resource against workload, and ensure delivery of balanced workload for the Depot. React positively to deal with out of course failures to ensure the delays are minimised.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Reports to the Depot Manager Salisbury Traincare Depot.
  • Responsible for allocation of units to service for SWR West of England Line, Local Hampshire services, Bristol services.
  • Ensure preparation of trains allocated to services.
  • Responsible for safe operation of Salisbury Traincare Depot.
  • Effective and efficient utilisation of Depot Drivers.
  • Manipulate all stock based a Salisbury to meet the needs of the Train Plan and all safety, maintenance and quality requirements.
  • Rolling stock requiring attention is identified and the workload is prioritised in support of the Production Process.
  • Allocate units to diagrams using Genius system.
  • Liaise with Operations Department and Signal box as required.
  • Issue of Train Preparation certificate to Traincrew.
  • Issue and control of ‘Contractors Permits to Work'.
  • Ensure safety of contractors and visitors on site.
  • Pro active use of unit diagnostic systems (Nexala) to identify in service failure modes and take appropriate action to minimise delays to service.
  • Maintain effective TIN Log and gather information to determine Delay Attribution.
  • Produce and circulate end of day summary reports.
  • Prepare and circulate five day forward projections of allocation of units to diagrams to ensure maintenance needs are met and Depot workload is balanced.
  • Liaise with Materials Manager to ensure al materials are planned for exams.
  • Input defects and casualties to Genius and unit history files and maintain appropriate records in Genius log.
  • Liaise with Depot Manager and SWR Control Manager regarding movement of units to and from Level 4 and Level 5 maintenance locations and out stations and keep records as appropriate.
  • Pro actively monitor services operated by Class 159 and 158 units, bringing any deviation from plan to the attention of the Depot Manager/Control Manager and assist in restoration to normal working.
  • In conjunction with Depot Manager, allocate units to diagrams to ensure units which are called to works have achieved maximum permissible mileages without having to stand idle awaiting due date.
  • Liaise with other Depot, Fitters, Traincrew and other Train Operating Companies as necessary.
  • Assist with training as required.
  • Audit unit mileages and exams to ensure accuracy and integrity of data.
  • Record all cleans and external washes of units.
  • Undertake additional tasks as required by the Depot Manager, applicable to the role.

  • Depot Operational decisions.
  • Service Operational decisions

As a minimum, you will need to have:

  • Thorough knowledge of Depot Operating Procedures and safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of SWR Operations and Procedures.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations relating to shunting, if not competent will be required to pass out competent to shunt.
  • Experience of IT systems, including Trust, Tops, Ravers, Genius, Word, Lotus Notes.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to write report

About the location

Salisbury Depot is home to South Western Railway's award winning Class 15X diesel fleet. The engineering team at the depot are responsible for all aspects of maintenance and repair of the trains, this includes; engines, transmissions, electrical control equipment, HVAC and the passenger environment amongst many other systems.

Working pattern

Working an average of 42 hours per week over 4 days

Dayshifts for 5 weeks - 0630 to 1600 Monday to Friday
Nightshift for 10 weeks - 1900 to 0630 5 nights on 5 nights off
