Counsellor (15hrs) PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland

The counsellor will be the first point of contact for individuals in our Belfast office but will also carry out some outreach work

Description of the Role

  • They will comprehensively assess the needs of their client base
  • They will deliver face to face safe and confidential counselling sessions on a flexible basis meeting the needs of the clients
  • They will attend monthly individual/group clinical supervision to support this service
  • They will promote and manage effective communication with clients and related agencies whilst maintaining boundaries of confidentiality
  • They will contribute to/work as a member of the Care Team

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to show warmth, acceptance and honesty during counselling sessions to create a trusting relationship between client and counsellor so that it is possible to explore problems, clarify issues, focus and prioritise difficulties, challenge behaviours wherever necessary and promote change

High personal integrity and professionalism will be essential, as well as a commitment to high standards of service and respect for the values and ethos of PIPS.

Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and across NI, if necessary, is essential, as well as attendance at clinical supervision and clinical reflective group supervision.

Due to the nature of the role, a full valid driving licence and/or access to transport is also required.

Qualifications

  • Professional recognised qualification in Counselling at Diploma level or above, 
  • Registered as a counsellor with the BACP, IACP or NCS
  • Counselling – minimum 200 hours post qualifying hours within the last 2 years

Essential Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively (both face to face and in writing).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with significant experience of building, managing and sustaining relationships with a wide range of people from multi-disciplinary backgrounds.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to be a flexible and cooperative member of the team.
  • Ability to assess and balance risks associated with delivering activities for adults, children and young people.
  • Good organisational skills with an ability to prioritise work, meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to practice empathy and sensitivity in coping with a wide range of emotional issues
  • High levels of ethical judgement and practice
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Excellent oral and written skills.
  • Able to work independently, managing appointments and inputting data into IT systems.
  • Evidence of having completed minimum 150 hours clinical supervised practice hours
  • An understanding of equal opportunities issues
  • Experience and ability to assess, manage and work therapeutically with crisis, risk and complex presentations
  • Knowledge of safeguarding requirements and policies, in accordance with current NI legislation
  • Experience of liaising effectively with voluntary and statutory bodies
