Senior Category Manager

The opportunity:

A global food company renowned for its amazing culture is excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Category Manager.

In this pivotal role, you will drive category engagement with major supermarket customers while elevating the company's internal focus on the category agenda. You'll take the lead in crafting and executing a winning strategy that fosters sustainable, long-term growth and boosts market share.

Key responsibilities include developing and championing key category initiatives aligned with the category vision, while also enhancing the team's capabilities. A critical aspect of the role involves close collaboration with brand teams to ensure that brand strategies and activations are optimized to deliver significant category growth.

What will my key accountabilities be?

  • Owning and developing powerful category partnerships with customers to identify and action opportunities for growth, demonstrating a clear understanding of how retailers operate and comprehensive buyer understanding.
  • Leading category reviews, including online. Identifying issues, opportunities and strategies / tactics to deliver growth for the category as well as the business.
  • Making gains & optimising space, range & merchandising to ensure fair share of business for the business
  • Knowing your data sets and the category, the macro trends & putting the customer and shopper at the heart of all category activity. Owning the narrative both internally & externally.
  • Providing leadership and inspiration to the team to develop functional excellence and show thought leadership in Category to grow team capabilities. Challenging the Status Quo and bring a fresh perspective / new ideas
  • Represent the category & retailer perspective in the development of brand strategy, NPD and portfolio management to deliver category value & sustainable growth
  • Develop powerful partnerships with Sales & Marketing in order to influence & shape the development & execution of customer account strategies to ensure mutual growth

Who will I be working with?

External: Customers – across Buying and Category teams

Internal: Wide range of stakeholders across sales, brand, shopper marketing, demand planning, and finance

A great candidate will have:

  • Category management experience in an FMCG environment
  • The ability to work with complex data and be able to develop compelling, high impact stories to positively influence others
  • Have led at least one big range review from start to finish, with tangible results in delivering growth for the category and business
  • Experience of range rationalisation, demonstrating a confident & well thought out approach
  • Demonstrates the ability to go beyond range assortment to bigger picture thinking, including the execution of 3-5 year category strategy
  • The ability to build powerful partnerships at all levels and be able to communicate with impact, effectively managing stakeholders.
  • Be nimble and take ownership to make things happen at pace; highly customer & results focussed
  • Be curious with a learning mindset to continually raise the bar

  • Middle stage : - Understanding your capabilities : - SHL assessment – verbal, numerical, OPQ
  • Second Stage – face to face meeting with team stakeholders. Interview to explore more around some key competencies, behaviours and how you like to work. To give you a flavour of what you would be working on, they will brief you to prepare a short presentation for you to talk to them about.
