We are looking for someone who can add to and strengthen the skills of the Board in particular its focus on equality, diversity and inclusivity (EDI), not only in respect of our workforce, but also how we engage with our patients and communities and seek to reduce inequalities in healthcare access, experience and outcomes. Applicants may have lived experience through having a protected characteristic or may have may supported groups and communities that are underrepresented or face inequalities in healthcare. This could include people from ethnic minority backgrounds, people living with a disability, people who are LGBTQ+ and / or from a range of faiths.
They hold the organisation to account for the delivery of strategy and ensure value for money. They are also responsible for ensuring that risks to the organisation and the public are managed and mitigated effectively. Led by an independent chair and composed of a mixture of both executive and independent non-executive members, the board has a collective responsibility for the performance of the organisation.
We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

They will use their skills and personal experience as a member of their community to:
- Promote a quality-focused and patient-centred culture, through an EDI lens, supporting the setting of the Trusts values, mission, vision, objectives and plans.
- Provide independent judgement and advice on issues of equality, diversity and inclusion in respect of Trust strategy, vision, performance, resources and standards of conduct. Constructively challenge, influence and help the executive directors develop proposals on such strategies to enable the organisation to fulfil its healthcare leadership responsibilities for the local community and the diverse populations represented within it. Champion different communities and population groups, who are often under represented, voice and interests within the organisation to address health inequalities through a collaborative community and system partnership approach.
- Ensure that the board gives due consideration to EDI and health inequalities in its objectives for quality, and for performance across the range of its functions.
- Assist fellow directors in setting the Trusts values and standards and ensure that its obligations to its stakeholder and the wider community are understood and fairly balanced at all times
Ensure that the organisation values diversity in its workforce and demonstrates equality of opportunity in its treatment of staff and patients and in all its business.
- Work with the Council of Governors to aid their understanding of the Boards approach to EDI and reducing health inequalities and to help maximise the Council of Governors own contribution to these important areas.
- Engage with, and be a key link from the Board with the Trusts Staff Network groups acting as a conduit for a Board to Ward approach for these forums.
- Demonstrable enthusiasm and commitment to the principles of Equality and Diversity & willingness to champion this within the organisation.
Experience of representing groups or communities, populations or groups with protected characteristics.
An ability to understand, and develop group or organisational understanding of the EDI agenda and specifically the views of one or more of the staff groups and communities served by the Trust, such those from Black, Ethnic and minority backgrounds, people living with a disability, LGBTQ+ and individuals from all faiths. The ability to translate those views into considerations which support planning and decision-making at Board level.
A depth of knowledge and experience of supporting organisations, groups or communities in developing their approach to equality, diversity and inclusion.
