Job summary

We are looking for someone who can add to and strengthen theskills of the Board; in particular its focus on equality, diversity andinclusivity (EDI), not only in respect of our workforce, but also how we engagewith our patients and communities and seek to reduce inequalities in healthcareaccess, experience and outcomes. To that end, we are inviting applications fromapplicants with a wide range of backgrounds who are committed to EDI and haveexperience in representing groups or populations as part of an EDI agenda. Applicantsmay have lived experience through having a protected characteristic or may havemay supported groups and communities that are underrepresented or faceinequalities in healthcare. This couldinclude people from ethnic minority backgrounds, people living with adisability, people who are LGBTQ+ and / or from a range of faiths.

To make an effective contribution in this role,the successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate the temperament,ability and experience to work with colleagues on the Board, and with leadersand managers throughout the Trust, and to understand and contribute to thedirection of a large and complex organisation.

Main duties of the job

NHS Boards play a key role inshaping the strategy, vision and purpose of an organisation. They hold theorganisation to account for the delivery of strategy and ensure value formoney. They are also responsible forensuring that risks to the organisation and the public are managed andmitigated effectively. Led by an independent chair and composed of a mixture ofboth executive and independent non-executive members, the board has acollective responsibility for the performance of the organisation.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

The Associate Non-Executive Director will work withExecutive and Non-Executive Directors as a non- voting member of the Board.They will use their skills and personal experience as a member of theircommunity to:

- Promote a quality-focused and patient-centred culture,through an EDI lens, supporting the setting of the Trusts values, mission,vision, objectives and plans.

- Commit to working to, and encouraging within the Trust,the highest standards of probity, integrity and governance arrangements toconform to best practice and statutory requirements.

- Provide independent judgement and advice on issues ofequality, diversity and inclusion in respect of Trust strategy, vision,performance, resources and standards of conduct. Constructively challenge,influence and help the executive directors develop proposals on such strategiesto enable the organisation to fulfil its healthcare leadership responsibilitiesfor the local community and the diverse populations represented within it. Thiswill include providing constructive advice and support for the development andoversight of plans to reduce health inequalities.

- Champion different communities and population groups, whoare often under represented, voice and interests within the organisation toaddress health inequalities through a collaborative community and systempartnership approach.

- Support Board Committees in developing their focus on EDIand health inequalities, through attendance advice and challenge.

- Ensure that the board gives due consideration to EDI andhealth inequalities in its objectives for quality, and for performance acrossthe range of its functions.

- Assist fellow directors in setting the Trusts values andstandards and ensure that its obligations to its stakeholder and the widercommunity are understood and fairly balanced at all times

Ensure that the organisation values diversity in itsworkforce and demonstrates equality of opportunity in its treatment of staffand patients and in all its business.

- Work with the Council of Governors to aid theirunderstanding of the Boards approach to EDI and reducing health inequalitiesand to help maximise the Council of Governors own contribution to theseimportant areas.

- Engage with, and be a key link from the Board with theTrusts Staff Network groups acting as a conduit for a Board to Ward approachfor these forums.

- Provide mentorship to aspirant leaders fromthose groups under-represented in leadership and board level positions.
